Those particular ones were great for the lighter stuff like 357 and 44 spec but for me, they did not ideally position my hand for a gun with big recoil like the 4.2 629. With full power loads it would rotate rapidly and really pound the webbing between my thumb and index finger. The Nill grips with open back and checkering work better with magnum loads for me.

The wood Hogues work really well for me too.

Of the two option you give I'd take the 5 inch. But were I given my druthers I'd go for the shorter 4.3 with no underlug, but I'd just be shooting 44 Specials.

Model 29 6.5 inch and my Ruger Redhawk 4.2 inch are both super accurate, the weight of the Ruger permit no more muzzle flip than my 29...

They are both great 44 mag... JP.

One thing is sure i have made my mind, i want something with full underlug, looks better finished for my taste. Also looks a bit more modern as far as revolvers go. Too bad SW don't have vented top rib i find that looks awesome.
5" or 6", with nice wooden grips (probably hogues from what i see)
Nickel finish seem scarce, so eventually i would ask a smith if he could bright polish SS and if there would be downsides to it.

So now i will start looking at the EE and refresh it twice a day to find my revolver!

I personally really like the look of the full flush underlug, and the 6.5" barrel in my opinion has the best proportions. I waited a long time for one of the Talo editions to come up for sale, then bought mine. After hand painting the gold medallion on the grip it looks like this:

yes i agree with you, 6" with full underlug looks just right, very nice ratio between grip size and barrel lenght.
If they are scarce, this means if one pops up on tue EE it would be priced accordingly, and probably too much for me.
I spend a truck load in IPSC every year, this side project must not affect my competition budget

I went blindly into my 629 purchase after reading a bunch of material on Elmer Keith. Needless to say, I went with a 4.2" due to it coming close to the specs on Keith's preferred sidearm. If I could do a redo it would be the model 29, just to match up well with my M27 and M57. There is a certain satisfaction in lining up the brothers on the table. My 627 PC gun looks like an ugly duck with the rest of the bunch. Yes, the guns are not just for shooting and aesthetics do count IMHO. Go with the emotional purchase that pleases you the most rather than public opinion.

The 5 inch classic with full underlug and the 6.5 are much easier to shoot for sure. Hell I had a 29-2 with 8 3/8 barrel that was by far the most accurate 44 mag I have ever shot. However, I just love the look of the shorter barrels, if I could have a 3 inch barrel I would, instead I have the 4.2 629.

I bought a NIB Smith&Wesson 629 Classic .44 Magnum sporting a 6" bbl with full underlug and soft Houge rubber grips, not those newer SH!tty ones they switched too, probably to save $$$ Houge was asking for higher price for this new production run lol, let the customer eat the cost.

The stainless steel 629 Classic is an amazing heavy hitter and has a classy elegance to it.

The Talo 629 with stubby 3" bbl is simply breath taking ....if we had US gun laws I'd own one for sure.
