which 7mm...?

it's a 280.....just need to stamp it and get it blued......

now, for the short action....I have a 257 Roberts Mountain Rifle barrel here that would work........or a 24" stainless factory 7-08 tube....

Gentlemen, I have to go with Noel on this one, 7x64 Brenneke...but NOT on a Remington !

You have a barrel threaded for a large ring Mauser, chambered in 7x64 Brenneke, and you are changing it to fit a Remington....are you mad....beg, borrow or steal a suitable large ring Mauser and do the job properly.

As an aside, for a Remington it should be .280 rem only, for the rule of thumb is;
US action...US cartridge.
Euro action...Euro cartridge.
After all, you would not chamber a Ross in a modern short magnum...would you ?

Yes, yes I would. There is no rule that says you must use US cartridges in US rifles and Euro cartridges in Euro rifles or the other way around. I hope you were kidding. - dan

To a point..no.
Let me put it this way, would you chamber a nice commercial Waffen Fabrik Oberndorf into .280 rem, or would you opt to utilise 7x64 Brenneke.
Or as some cretin over here did, chamber/rebarrel a Brno Model 21 to .22-250.
Within reason, some things go together...some don't.

....but why chamber a 7x57 in a long 700?....there's room in the box for a 280....
Actually, why put a 280 in a 700 when there's room for a 375H&H in there?

I like the extra room I have in my 700 for the shorter 257Roberts. I'd rather have too much room then not enough. Get your 7x57 with a longer throat and add more powder.
