I have a weatherby Mark V currently chambered in 30-378 but I am thinking of rebarreling it to a bigger cal. Wondering which one of these do you guys think. if you have personal history it is better. I plan on shooting 0-500yards. I would use 250gr bullets in the 338. choices are 338 Lapua, 338-378wby, 378wby or 416 wby.
thanks

If you want a weatherby factory CM barrel in 338/378 I could sell you one. I pulled it off to put a 510 barrel on. Other than that I would do the 378 for a 500yd thumper.

Well....The 338 is hands down the best long range choice, but choose a good bullet and fast 375 will get the 500yd job done....No problem.
The 375 has a cool big hole factor that the 338 is missing....Gets my vote.

Your range limitations pretty much exclude the 416Wby....Which is kind of a shame because to use a 416 is to love it.

0-500, I'd get a .375 Ruger or 375 Weatherby,,,,

I've had the 338 and 378. Both awsome long range cals. The 378 is past my prone shooting recoil level. In fact you have to hold it tight enough that real long range accuracy is hindered. At least for me. The 338-378 is one awsome round. 210 TSXs at 3450 easy, only shot two mulies with it. You may want to look for bigger targets. Oh no problem to go 3000+ with 250s.

big

for those who don't know the big weatherby action has the big bolt face. Ultra mags don't work. I am thinking along the lines of a big game hammer. I will be using nosler or barnes possibly serria's. I think a 250gr nosler partition at 3000fps would put a bad hurting on a moose or elk out to 500.

I would go with the 378. Big bullets, and big boom. Plenty to get it done well past 500 yards. If going longer has your interest, then I would look at the 338/378. I think the 378 is the best case Weatherby ever made.

Big Bore rebarrel!

Of the rounds you listed, my choice would be the 338/378 Wby. (best fit for that rifle) This is an excellent long range round..superior to the Lapua.

I have done a lot of work and hunting with this round. I currently have two Ruger #1's in this chambering. One with original 26" barrel and one with a 30" Gaillard custom (I have another one being built with a 34" barrel)

I have used the 250 gr Nosler partition exclusively..(other bullets won't hold up if you jump something at close range. Farthest shot to date is 647 yards on a big bull moose. One round through and through. broadside.

I can consistently dial in and hit a 10" paper plate at each 100 yd interval out to 1,000 yards. (not theoretical..actual firing on a 1,000 yard range.)

Once the new rifle arrives I plan to try out the new Barnes triple shock and 'Tipped' triple shock 338 bullets in 286gr.

A long barrel makes this cartridge reach its potential (30" barrel chronys a 250gr at 3400 FPS)

Having said all this..'Farshots' suggestion of a 416 Rigby necked to 9.3 is also very interesting..its called a 366 DGW and lists a 250gr bullet at 3253 Fps

And a final note..338-375 can't really be considered BIG BORE!!!

A 647 yard shot at a broadside bull moose would be very, very easy for a cartridge that is better than a 338 Lapua.

Sounds like you should go 338-378.
