my dad wants a cheap 17hmr. which one is best for around $300? choices seem to be marlin or savage.. any others?

which has the best trigger? best built? dont really want to push it to CZ money, as it will not be used lots, just for when the .22 is a bit short of range for gophers...

thanks

The Savage Mark II-FV with Accutrigger looks like a nice rifle. 21" heavy barrel, synthetic. SIR has one for $241. But it is in 17HM2, which I hear is not as good as the 17HMR. Although they might come chambered for 17HMR.

Marlin Model 917 VS-CF also looks pretty sweet if your dad likes stainless and synthetic. $324.99 with 2 mags.

yeh, dont want a HM2, sure we want HMR. shame the mark II doesnt come in HMR as its nice looking..

well i quite like the look of the savage 93r17GV the wooden blued one. $299.. was wondering if the new accu trigger is as good as they say though?

also, it looks like savages need centre fire type rings, rather than dovetail mounts, is that correct?

You will need weaver style rings but you'd want them anyway they are much stronger and more consistant if you were to remove you're scope and replace it again poi should remain constant. Yes IMO the accutrigger is awesome. I have it on a 22-250 and love it. Apparently Its a little different on rimfires but I believe it still quite clean and crisp. Have you considered a nef? I had one in 17 and it was great for a $200 rifle. Trigger was surprisingly good and it was crazy accurate (1/2 moa @ 100 yds)

hmm, im not keen on 2 piece mounts/bases.. i use sportsmatch dovetail mounts, which are superb, www.sportsmatch-uk.com and are used by lots of LE and military snipers around the world, and are the same sort of design as on Accuracy international rifles.. id never even seen a 2 piece weaver style mount until i moved here in october..

having read a lot of reviews, im leaning more towards the marlin. apparently the build is better, and the trigger although rough out of the box can be cleaned up very easily...

i think the problem is the accutrigger is great on centrefires, not so on rimfires..

I have a Marlin 17V that is a superb shooter. I changed the trigger to a rifle basix one and put on a BSA Sweet 17 6-18 scope with tasco rings. I don't really like the way the rings mount, but they have been fine for 4 years now with no problems.

I would swear my life by Savage. Definitely the most reliable rimfires I own. The Accutrigger, I believe, is more of a gimmick, but a nice option. You should be able to purchase a model without the Accutrigger.

17HMR on a budget = NEF Sportster.... $180 @ SIR Mailorder....

hmm, he's not on that tight a budget, just doesnt want to spend loads as it will only be used occasionally.

hopefully there will be a few at the calgary arms fair next week so we can have a look at some in the flesh..

For $189, it's a hell of a rifle. Single shot/break open may not be your cup of tea, but do a search for some reviews of the NEF and you might be suprised.

Perhaps another option might be to pick up a NEF Handi rifle (Sportster) in something like a .204 ruger or .223 and extend the range of your gopher shooting. You could still do that for under your budget and have some room for $$ for a scope!

Aside from that, I have the Savage 93 in HMR and love it !! That would be a great choice too !!!!

Good luck to you !!!

NEF Handi's

I have the 204 and 17HMR by NEF and love 'em both!

I've yet to see any .17HMR that wouldn't outshoot any .22 LR I've ever owned. They're all a blast to shoot and I could probably pry my truck out of the ditch with the bull barrel on my wife's .17 and it'd still shoot half inch groups all day long. Buy whatever grabs your eye

well the budget is $300 for a rifle, and it will be having a $700 Schmidt bender scope.. so the scope money isnt an issue.
i really dont like the NEF and really dont want single shot. i think having read a lot we might have to just push it to a CZ, as anything else seems to be a compromise in one area or another.

If I was going to use that type of scope for this project... I'd seriously look at something in a .223/.204/Hornet and have some serious long range gopher fun!!

If the single shot isn't your thing, and you're considering CZ money - then I'd also throw the Savage Models 25 and 40 in the mix. :D
