Which do you prefer, mossberg or Remington?

I just got an email from Ithaca stating that they now offer a version of their Defense shotgun with a removeable barrel.

If only they could be convinced to start offering Stakeout length barrels again...

870 Police with Wilson upgrades (ghost ring sights and +2 mag extension) 6 round Messa side saddle and magpul stocks never had an issue in over 8 years and hundreds of buck, slug, and birdshot through its IMP cylinder barrel. I have shot a mosberg Mav88 a lot as well and it doesn't have the same feel...at all. However he did pay a 5th of what I payed and they both go bang every time. Remington is what I own and if I were to get another it would likely be another Remmy. Here's a pick of mine with an 858

I own 870P's and I really like them, don't own any Mossberg.

Have to admit though, the Mossberg really is a better design. I can't stand Mossberg for the most part ... but they came up with a great pump in the 590A1. A 14" will be on my list sooner or later.

so ...... where would one purchase this SG ?

I prefer the tang safety on the mossberg shotguns, and for some reason factory 870's don't fit me. If I've got my thumb wrapped around the grip I end up getting punched in the nose once in a while. It's tough to break a double when your eyes are watering. I think they're both good shotguns for the price, but I use mossbergs for the above reasons.

Damn ... too bad Ithaca do not make new short models. You would think their marketing people would catch onto the fact that the shorter shot guns are gaining in popularity.

Very nice looking SG's guys.

You guys are making me wanna pick up a short Mossberg.

My wife doesn't buy it when I blame you dudes for this.

99% of my experience is with Remington, but I've had enough exposure to Mossbergs to see the merit in those. My main "fun" gun is an 870P, and as much as I like it...I feel it's overpriced for what it is. Maybe I'm just cheap. :) I pretty much never run 3" (or more) through it, so I might have been better-served by an old Wingmaster with a rifle-sight barrel. The parkerized finish is slick though.

I inherited a 16ga. model 37 last year and that gun has been an eye-opener. Light, fast handling, shoulders/points extremely well. I blame the cost of the shells for not using it much..but part of the reason is actually being afraid of liking it more than my 870s. lol If/when I find some free time this fall...it will be my go-to grouse gun.

Mossbergs~I got a chance to use a model 500 recently, a full mag-tube version...looked like a parkerized finish but maybe just satin blued? (does anyone here know?) Anyhow, the fellow who owns it used to have a 590 but it was too heavy to be enjoyable for him..and after a few hundred rounds, the front sight rattled loose and fell off. (never found it) He FAR prefers the 500 and I was surprised I liked it as much as I did.

I like the 870P and have 3 barrels for it...2 stock sets...2 mag extensions~I can set that thing up for any one of a number of applications. Mostly, it wears it's synthetic butt stock, a grippy black Hogue pump, and a 28" RemChoke barrel from an Express for clays and crows. Fun platform, and 100% feeding/shooting/extracting reliability.

The right answer for the OP is to get both of course. :)

^I have several 12 bore M37s.
But when I wish to hunt all day long over hill and dale, it's either the 20 gauge M37 Featherlight circa 1971 or the Ithaca/SKB O/U with 26 inch Mod/IC also in the same gauge that get the most field time. I know it sounds rather strange but the slightly longer full choke 28inch barrel is often the best harvester in this sub gauge M37.

Balances about perfectly and points sssooo naturally like my finger.

Edit: Yeah, not black or green shotguns but......
