Which do you prefer, mossberg or Remington?

I ran a shotgun course this weekend with my 590A1. Prior to the course I had ran literally 1 round down the tube, and that was 100% of my pump action shotgun experience.

Prior to the weekend I had put a Magpul SGA stock on it, assuming that a single point sling setup would be my cup of tea, which it was not. Other than that, it's 100% stock. By the end of the day I was running drills consistently negligibly slower than my much more experienced peers. Simply put, it's an easy to use shotgun that has very little (if any) learning curve to it. For a lefty like me, I'm glad I went with the 590 over the 870 simply for the location of the safety. Not having to get my gloves caught while reloading was nice too.

I can't comment on the 870 platform, but I will say that the Mossberg is wonderful for a beginner like me. I'll be looking for a short barrel version of the 500/590 soon for a backpack/under the bed gun.

Grab a 14" kit. Two in one. Just a thought. I have five kits. Easy to swap over

I might, but for the $400 kit I could find something nice on the EE and save the hassle of swapping. Plus, I'd like something even shorter than 14" for an "under the bed" kind of gun.

While I'd prefer something 500/590, I shoukd have mentioned that price will be the deciding factor, so I likely won't end up with one.

Ya, I see your point. But Remington is a MUCH larger company than Mossberg. Their flagship rifle the 700 is most popular rifle, the 870 most popular shotgun, they make pistols/1911's , manufacture premium ammunition, and much more.

I'm sure Remington 870 are in more use in LE, etc, etc.....but THEY HAVE A BUDGET, and when Remington fills an LE contract I'm sure they get a nice price. Every single of my 870's have given me an issue. My 14" M590A1 and other Mossies have not. Mechanically the 590A1 is better, sorry. Sure the receiver is aluminum, but all steel trigger group, controls, etc.

The dual extractors and heavy duty solid ejector V.S. Remington's single extractor and pinned springy ejector and not as tough or durable. When the action gets all gummy, the Remmy might have failures to extract a spent hull, while the Mossy kicks them out with authority a solid 5 feet away, and with force.

The Mossgerg M590A1 is priced so right. Your getting a $1,000 shotgun for $650-$750 NIB.

The finely tunned Remington 870 Police Max And Wilson Combat/Scattergun Tech 870's Are very good shotguns indeed, but on design principals the 590 is superior to the 870, especially any entry level Express. I own my grandfathers circa 1968 Wingmaster blued, polished chrome bolt, 30" bbl fixed full choke, gold bead sight, white mid bead.....I wasn't even born and my Nonno was bucking shots out of that Wingmaster with my 15 year old father and now it sits in my gun vault :) flawless operation...flawless. Just replaced the mag spring and extractor spring and it's like brand new. I'm taking it out this Sunday for Father Day with my pops at Silverdale to do some trap shooting clays :)

But any day of the week....I'll take a NIB Mossberg M590A1 14"/18"/20" with Ghost Ring sights and SpeedFeed Stock (4 rounds) over an 870 without thinking of it. I own a factory 14" but I'd take the full size 20" Ghost Ring sigh, 9-shot defender for general use

A polished blue Remington 870 Police Magnum in american walnut is a gorgeous boom stick....or a factory parkerized 14" Police Magnum is just as ###y.....

BUT.....

the Mossberg M590A1 in any barrel configuration, is a MUCH better piece of machinery. Reliability is second to none, due to its dual extractors, heavy duty solid ejector and better elevator system, I've NEVER had an issue pumping rapid shots with my 590A1. I've owned about 5 Remington 870's, an older Wingmaster, a modern Marine Magnum, Expresses, etc....and all have had an ejection issue once or twice, failure to eject (spent shell bounced around in the action after the pump backed open, etc)

The Mossberg M590A1 is a freaking Battle Tank, a TRUE combat shotgun, an all steel beast with a bayonet lug and super accurate/super tuff Ghost Ring peep sights. My compact factory 14" with Ghost Ring sights using 1 oz slugs can get solid, consistent hits centre mass at 100 yards, even 200 yards couple hits here and there after playing with elevation holds.

To me....the Mossy M590A1 is surpassed only by the Benelli M4 Super 90.....but I'd still select the low-tech Mossy

Are you a Mossberg regional sales rep, or just a Mossberg fanatic?

I got three 590A1s. 20", 18.5", and 14". All plain-Jane with a bead sight. Like them just fine for the intended purpose. A close range 00 buck blaster! But my two 870P are a bit more refined with a super fast action. My 20" 870P is rifle sighted for slug because of the imp cyl. My 14" is express sighted for close range pretitor defence... Actually all my 870s have an intended use. My Mossbergs are just... toys. :)

The one thing I do prefer about the Mossberg is to be able to just drop the shell in and push it ahead, without getting your fingers caught like on an 870.

Otherwise...I'll take the 870.

I've fondled most, run some, and kept fewer. I've had all my Remingtons run flawlessly - despite what the girls say about 'em - and an Ithaca 37 that's slicker than snot. If you looking for the Honda Civic, get yourself a plain-jane Remington 870 Express. Yes, Express. Like wine, there's the odd 'bad' year....but guess what? Pretty much all the other ones are stellar. They are reliable, they feel solid, and if you buy a new one, you're getting the guarantee in Canada. Yes, in Canada.

The Mossberg is another fine piece...as long as you buy a 590 or 590A1. If you're a fan of cheaply made tin, then you could waste your money on a 500 series gun, but I don't think i've ever felt anything sloppier. They may have been a fine gun 30+ years ago, but today's 500 feels like the action bars are made of plastic. Go for a 590A1 or go home. Heck, if you need to drive a fencepost, I couldn't image a better tool ;)

At the end of the day, these questions are kind of ####, simply because they depend on so much - rule wise:

Value: Remington Express - not the Tactical or any other marketing model
Slick: Old Remington 870 Wingmaster, or new Police
Durability: Mossberg 590A1 - get the heavy barrelled version
Ease of Repair (if parts are available): Mossberg 590A1
Ergos with a straight stock: Mossberg 590A1
Ergos with a Pistol Grip: Remington 870 (though great safety adapters due exist for the 590)
Support in Canada: Remington
Something to go with a HiPoint .45 - Mossberg 500

There are a ton of other factors to consider, but I'm assuming you're just trying to stir the pot a little ;).

Hee hee, he called us girls! And for the record, M590-A1's are all heavy barreled. Just sayin

First choice, I'll take my Fabarm. Then I'll take a Mossberg. Shot an 870 at the range and didn't see anything fantastic about it that an el-cheapo Maverick 88 wouldn't do as well. Never shot an 870P or Wingmaster though, heard those are more refined.

Remington for me.

I have a 20" 590A1 but the safety is acting up and the gun is too heavy so it's a paperweight to me now.

I have a 14" 590A1 too which is cool, but I just don't like the location of the safety or the action release. Parkerized guns drive me nuts too.
