Which do you prefer, mossberg or Remington?

Which one? 870 police or 590-A1? My first shotgun at 13 was a Remington single shot 20g. At 19 I picked up a Winchester 1300 pistol grip pump but always wanted a 870 police so that is the way I went. Years later my hunting partner let me play with his 590-A1 20" and my option started to change. As I looked into the mossberg platform more and did a few builds for other people I had a change of heart and sold all my Remington's. I now only have 590-A-'s and have no plans on looking back. I find them over built and very simple to work on. Just my option. What's yours?
 
Mossberg over Remington. Benelli over Mossberg. I don't think the 14/18.5 inch barreled Nova/ Supernova get the credit they deserve.
 
The Mossberg is easier to replace an ejector on, and the safety is good for lefty's out of the box. The control layout is pretty good with a standard stock on a mossberg but if pistol grips are your thing the 870 starts to make more sense with it's cross bolt safety. The ironic thing is that the Mossberg feels better with a pistol grip because it puts the hand a bit closer to the trigger..... Magpul's new shotgun stock has pretty much taken care of that though. The SGA stock's pistol grip is in between a traditional and a full pistol grip and suits the Mossberg very well. A Mossberg with a Magpul SGA stock has a nice reach to the trigger, allows for easy use of the safety and action release and has spacers to adjust the length of pull for any user or situation.
I find the action on my 870's are smoother and the foreend's don't rattle around like they do on the mossberg. The loading port on the Mossberg is better with the shell lifter in the up position but you get used to pushing shells in with the lifter down as well.
Up until the Magpul stock came on to the scene I'd probably take the Remington just for the "feel" of the gun but that stock really makes a difference in my hands (large but not extra large)

It's easier to find and swap barrels on 870's over the 590A1's so there is a bit more adaptability there for the 870 if a person wanted a one gun multi barrel option.
You'd have to go to a 500 to get that and then it's hard to find shorter barrels if you want that option.

My favorite 590A1 is the 14" model, followed by the 18.5 with a mag extension.

I have had 3 Mossberg's and do not have a single complaint. The first shotgun I purchased was a Maverick 88 (cheap version of the Mossberg 500). Ran over 2500 rounds through it (mostly target loads, but some slugs and 00 buck) and have yet to have a single issue on it.
 
A polished blue Remington 870 Police Magnum in american walnut is a gorgeous boom stick....or a factory parkerized 14" Police Magnum is just as ###y.....

BUT.....

the Mossberg M590A1 in any barrel configuration, is a MUCH better piece of machinery. Reliability is second to none, due to its dual extractors, heavy duty solid ejector and better elevator system, I've NEVER had an issue pumping rapid shots with my 590A1. I've owned about 5 Remington 870's, an older Wingmaster, a modern Marine Magnum, Expresses, etc....and all have had an ejection issue once or twice, failure to eject (spent shell bounced around in the action after the pump backed open, etc)


The Mossberg M590A1 is a freaking Battle Tank, a TRUE combat shotgun, an all steel beast with a bayonet lug and super accurate/super tuff Ghost Ring peep sights. My compact factory 14" with Ghost Ring sights using 1 oz slugs can get solid, consistent hits centre mass at 100 yards, even 200 yards couple hits here and there after playing with elevation holds.


To me....the Mossy M590A1 is surpassed only by the Benelli M4 Super 90.....but I'd still select the low-tech Mossy

I've never seen that solution, looks like they could down size it a bit to leave a bit more thumb space and still have an easy to hit action release.

It never seems in the way. I've got "normal" sized hands and can just reach it with my thumbnail.
This is the shortest model they make. I suppose a talented amateur could make their own.
Fitting the Shoten Armory part is very fiddley.

Nuttinfancy broke a new mossy on camera, My buddy Johns wouldn't feed and jammed shells, i wore one out goose hunting, the plastic dogs that replace the 2nd pin on the trigger group wore from cleaning, my gunsmith said don't clean it so much, but that's hard to do when you're using it hard and its not only a range gun. I carried an old Wingmaster on the job for years and i had no doubt it would work. The mossy is more serviceable by the average joe and is a good piece. At the end of the day though there are more 870 shotguns in the hands of LEO, armed guards and soldiers than the Mossberg even though the Mossy passed the mil spec test and the 870 failed.The 870 is the all steel, the Mossberg is actually an alloy tank. I purchase, repair, restore and sell 870 as a hobby( there's no money in it but its fun) so i know the shortcomings of the 870, especially with the new ones but there easy to fix. One thing i know for sure, you don't see many Mossbergs from the 60's floating around but there are a ton of 870's. Can you beat a successful track record? I vote no.

I've got 2 of each and I prefer the Mossberg. Hard to really go wrong with either, but the Mossbergs are what I like more. Many, many shells through them, few issues.
 
Have also had both, currently have an 870 tactical with Magpul furniture. I liked the Mossberg alot, the remington feels a bit smoother and I've had an easier time finding chokes for it. Both are great guns, but I'd take a Winchester Model 12 over either gun any day.
 
I have a 590A1 and an 870 and I love both, however if I had to choose one it would be the Mossberg. The 870's action might be a touch smoother, but the 590A1's controls are much better.
