Which is better for a budget bolt action, which can hunt deer if needed?

x2 for Marlin XL7 in .270 or 30-06 ... or Savage packaged 111 with a better scope.
I've put Nikon ProStaff on mine and am pretty happy with it.

Probably not a bad choice. The fit of the rifle to the shooter can make a big contribution to accuracy (or inaccuracy.) Even if e.g. a Stevens 200 shoots more accurately out of a vice than your Mossberg does, the way the stock fits you might mean that you shoot the Mossberg better than you can shoot that Stevens. The Stevens has established a excellent reputation for value as a low-budget hunting rifle, and the Mossberg may never quite equal that, but there are not a few owners of 100ATRs who report themselves very satisfied, and it certainly isn't as disreputable as the Remington 710/770 series.

A little tip on hunting, though: If you need 16x magnification to shoot a deer, you need to send someone to sneak closer and shoot it for you.

Congrats on the new rifle...enjoy! The Mossy was a much better choice
than the ultra-cheapo Remington 710... I've got a new Savage and it's
sub-moa and the new trigger is excellent, by the way... Let us know how
the Mossy shoots!
 
I will, I am headding to the range on Sunday (when the rain stops lol) I hope to have pics and review of how it went with the 6 types of ammo i bought to find out which works best for this rifle.

Thank you for the support and I am quite impressed at the scope, i expected a basic china scope, but this one is very nice and has a nice tower which can be adjusted easily with my fingures.
 
oh sweet jesus, AGAIN?

if you put '770' in the search field and click GO, it yields dozens of threads with page after page of #####ing about what a monumental piece of #%@$ the Remington 770 is. this alone should be a hint not to by the gun - it is probably the single most despised gun on earth.

im starting to realize that 99% of the hunting and sporting arms forum can be summed up with a mere 3 topics:

1. is the .30-06 enough for ________? (choose from moose/deer/bear)
2. zomg the Tikka T3 is the greatest gun ever made

3. im buying my first gun, what do you think of the 770?
 
They can all hunt deer. Either .308 or 30-06 will be fine, targets and deer can't tell the difference.

You'll tire of the 770 quickly, better to get a savage or stevens package rifle. And if you find you aren't really into bolts, savage and stevens have better resale value than 710 or 770.

Well, as you know, I am a big 200 fan ;), but today I bought a Marlin in 30-06, and will be at the range this weekend to see how it shoots.

It did feel a bit muzzle heavy until the scope was mounted. Balances quite nicely with the Elite on it.

.303 british. $99

It's not a humdinger modern uber-magnum, but it's taken elephants in the hands of british tommy's fighting the nazi's in north africa, so it's obviously a proven killer.

An old sporter costs $99 at your local gunshop. It's can't split a playing card at a mile, but you'd have a hard time buying a gun that won't print a group that you can cover with your hand at 200 yards.

You can reload your cartridges with a lee loader, they cost about 30 dollars. I load 60 cartridges with mine in the time it takes to watch 3 or 4 t.v. shows, working at a lazy pace.
