Which is more suitable for Win 70 FWT: .270 or .30-06?

Which is the more suitable caliber on the Model 70 Featherweight

.270 because of Jack O'Connor. Just fits somehow.

6.5x55mm to make me cry. Sold my old one, it's the one that got away.

.308 just for the slightly shorter and lighter dimensions.

All depends entirely on what you've already got in the safe though.
 
Had both calibers, kept the .270 because of the classic combo O'connor already stated.
You really could'nt go wrong with either.

I like the 130s in the .270 for Deer, but in regards to recoil, can't say I could actually feel a diff between those and 150s in the '06.
Great smooth working, accurate rifle, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

How the heck did that pesky:puke: 7mm-08 get in here? Who left the window open again,.......come on ...
 
I've posted this previously on another thread, but since I first started in hunting and rifle shooting, one of the more popular calibers of 'yester year' that I haven't had was the 270. I've since filled that void, twice. :redface:I now have a pair of 270's.

Apart from that, IF, I had to pick only one caliber, it would be the 30-06.
 
Nothing wrong with the .270, but my choice would be a Model 70 in .30-06 just because in theory it would be the only rifle you would ever need (like that would happen). Classic.
 
I voted .270. I grew up shooting a M70 fwt in .270, and to me it just fits. Plus the O'Connor factor.
But if you'll be using it for moose and elk more often than deer, then I think the 30-06 might be a better choice. Not to say that a .270 can't do those bigger animals, though.

I think you hit the nail on the head.
To me the OP should state whether this will be primarily a deer rifle with an occasional moose hunt, if so the .270 is the way to go. If primarily used for large game I would prefer a .30/06. Not that the .270 won't knock over larger game, just that the 06 has a much better selection of heavy bullets.

I wanted to get the idea of what caliber the featherweight would be more suited to as an all around shooter, not what caliber would be suitable for some kinds of game.

well, as with any gun some shoot, some don't. i personally choose the 270 because i love the caliber and with a light gun "should" have a little less recoil than the 06. jmo of course. all i know is my model 70fwt 270 is a tack driver.
 
What a tough choice....the .270 with a 130gr TTSX at well over 3100fps (3200 is possible) is great for everything....but so is the .30-06!
 
My friend has a featherweight in 30-06 and the recoil is a little sharp. Hunting is fine, but the bench feels bad fairly quickly. I prefer the bigger but slower recoil of my 45-70 loaded hot compared to that. I would get a feather weight in 6.5x55, 7mm-08 or anything really in that class if I didn't have a T3 lite in 6.5 already.

Has he tried the 150s?
 
He's lazy and shoots the box or two a year that his dad loads for him, some recipe he's been loading for like 30 years... He sure shoots some nice deer though, him, his brother and the dad all are pretty decent hunters.

He's 6'1" and 260 so it's not too bad for him. His brother is 6'5" and 350 and the feather weight looks like a stick in his hands. He got the full size model 70 in 30-06 and it's much nicer to shoot. Dad let them pick a rifle when they were 16 or 17 and that's what they both picked.. How original :)
 
the featherweight has to be a .270win....mine will fill a 1" circle at 100 yds with 6 shots with no effort at all, and it also has a very manageable recoil

Since we're talking Crow guns here I went with the 270 in my new FWT. Very happy with it. You could throw the 300 WSM in there too. Hahaha
