Which lever to get?

Looking at picking up a lever action 30-30 for deer season (yes its getting late to be picking out this years rifle... sue me). This would be my first time owning a lever, though I have handled and shot dozens of em. If one were to pick up a new one, which would you get?

I just recently picked up a Browning BLR in 308. seems to fit me well and cycles alright. I like the magazine. Trigger is pretty rough though. I intend to use it in the bush so shots will be short 100 Yards or so. should do fine for that.

While the browning is a nice rifle, I'm looking more for that classic look and the Browning is a bit above the price point of the other 2.

Check out the FaceBook auction groups and the EE. You can usually score a post-64 Winchester '94, in great condition, for between $400-$500 without looking too hard. I'd rather have a good used Winchester 94 than a new Marlin or Mossberg.

If your going to want a scope on it I'd look at the older Marlins.

Most versatile lever I have is a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45/70. From Deer to Dinosaur, it will drop them all. Easy to load and the variety is amazing. This gun is short, comes up fast and just feels right. Pick one up, especially a pre Rem and you will understand what I mean.

I also have a BLR 308 and it's me 2nd choice, then my 336 30-30.

For a hunting rig, look at the EE for a JM marked 336 Marlin or a pre-64 Winchester 94.
If you plan on getting a lever to have some fun with too, consider a .44 magnum. My 1892 is probably the most fun I own...aside from my Marlin 1894 Cowboy!!

You could do what I did...try to get one of everything. Up to 13, mostly marlins. It's a sickness..

Get the Marlin but I strongly suggest you buy it from a store to be able to inspect and handle it.

I have 2 Marlins; one in 30/30 and one in 35 Rem. Both are mid 70's mfg. I looked at new ones but they're too clunky and noisy. I really like my 35 Rem.

Marlins from 2007 to 2012 had a lot of problems but the new ones not only look good but they shoot darn good too...very happy with mine..

If you must buy new and at a price point I'd go Marlin but thoroughly inspect it prior to purchase.
That said I'd rather have a new BLR or an Alaskan or a new Ridge Runner...

Well I looked at the one that was linked up above and my offer was accepted. Looks like I'll be dipping my toes in the water with a Glenfield model 30 (336 essentially). I'm not a fan of the wood, so I may order a Boyd's upgrade and toss on a red dot for the dark bush I get into. But I also have to split the gun with the wife as she's coming out with me this year.
