Which lever to get?

Well I looked at the one that was linked up above and my offer was accepted. Looks like I'll be dipping my toes in the water with a Glenfield model 30 (336 essentially). I'm not a fan of the wood, so I may order a Boyd's upgrade and toss on a red dot for the dark bush I get into. But I also have to split the gun with the wife as she's coming out with me this year.

I think you will be happy with your choice! The older pre safety Marlins are very nice and very slick. A lot of guys find for end cap style to be more accurate then the regular barrel band.

OP, I have a Ruger 96/44 (lever action), custom built rifle, that I will sell you. If not interested, then get a Win 94, pre '64, of coarse.

^^ This ^^

Is there a specific reason for the Mossberg hate ? Other than they released that horrid 'tactical' version?

The reviews I've read seem generally positive and the couple I handled in store seemed quite decent. I already have a Win 94 and a Marlin 336 so I doubt I need another one but if somebody was shopping for m94 clone and didn't want to spend Miroku money on the new Winchester (or buy used) I would at least take a look at the Mossberg 464.

Early 464s had a large number of broken extractors. At first glance and from the reviews it was on the short list but within a year reports of failures were common. Of course the internet spreads bad experiences faster than the plague and it's been around for a while so the problem has likely been sorted out but as always buyer be-aware. In my case it was a moot point because my grandfather gave me his old.marlin 30AS. It is a great gun and very accurate.

OK that makes sense about broken extractors. I'm usually up on my Internet complaint/rant threads especially for lever guns but I must have missed those ones. Hopefully Mossberg has resolved the issue by now but the reputation damage is done, like for Remington's handling of Marlin...

Why buy a Mossberry when you already have two proven brands of lever actions? They certainly got it right a long time ago, thus the suggestion to buy a good older used one. The used Win and marlins seem to be going up in price but the mooseberry not so much.

If you want to buy a new lever, go ahead, but I certainly would not given the great selection of quality used guns out there.

I have a Marlin 336 that I gave my dad and all season 464 I just sold. I also have a Mossberg 464 SPX. Yeah, it's funky but super light and compact, made a great hunting gun this year.

I have this Marlin and like it.

Just remember to remove the butt stock and tighten down the set screw for the cross bolt (lawyer lock) safety spring.
Just lock it in the fire position.
This way you wont have to worry about two safeties.

I needed to scope one of mine, or replace the sights, my eyes are NOT that bad ... but it's still damn hard to see such fine beaded front sights. 1-4 or 3-9 works well on a level gun.
There was a time a few years back that I would have agreed with you, nowadays it's not a matter
of choice....

I second the Savage 99, light, nimble, and comes in good calibers that can shoot spitzer bullets. 30-30, 308, 300 savage, 303 savage. Otherwise a JM stamped Marlin 336.
