Which of these rifles would you take hunting?

... m305 ... hell 20 year kids hauled these through the jungle getting shot at.

And not one of those 20 year old kids had a choice of what rifle to take with them. There are about 600 better tools for the job than what the OP has in his closet. Pick one. Any one.

The Mosin M44 is an absolutely adequate rifle for what you describe. S&B makes a fine 180 grain load that will pass 2500 fps in the M44.

It is not heavy, it is a handy length, and has very nice sights. The guys that slag them have probably only seen them in pictures.

A traditional 100 yard deer rifle might be a 30-30 Lever action with open sights. The M305 and M44 are both easily up to the task, scoped or not. They both have more than enough power and more than enough accuracy. Only advantage the lever action has over the other 2 is that it is nicer to carry.

I hate shooting the M44 so, I would pick the M305. Frankly, if you can't get it done with that rifle at 100 yards, you can't get it done. :)

Every single one of your choices will do the trick for deer under your specific constraints OP. Don't think too much about it and you'll be fine. If I was in your shoes, I'd take the the m305 first. But all will do the job just fine. Don't over think this.

Strange how this thread is turning out. Everyone is polarized. Half are saying the rifles are adequate, the other half are saying the rifles are horrible.

Please use any of your rifles (maybe even the shotgun) and tell us how you did. That should settle the question.:d

I would probably take the m305 but the M44 would likely be fine. Who cares if they are not perfect...they are 'what you got' and they beat the hell out of round stone in a slingshot! Pick one and have fun. Just be conscious of some range limitations on a couple of your options and get adequate practice in before you go hunting and you will do fine!

I have a 'quiver' full of rifles perfect for the game you are after....regrettably that does NOT make me a great hunter! Just get good with what you have!

Maybe those that believe they are a horrible choice haven't shot them much? I've never owned a M305 but I've shot a few. Didn't seem to have any trouble hitting deer killzone size targets with iron sights well past 100m, and the guys that owned them and shot them often did far better than me at longer ranges, too. A bit heavy by modern standards, but not that big a deal, he's not going on a goat or sheep hunt.

Use what you have, save your pennies for that 2017 dream rifle! :)

As far as a hunting rifle goes either of your 2 CF rifles will do the job nicely. I wouldn't choose the other two, the 357 or the shotgun when you have better choices at hand. The biggest question is your skill level and keeping your shots within it. A bow is a very lethal hunting device as long as one understands it's limitations, your two rifles are the same, both are adequate as long as you grasp the limitation of your equipment and stay within those limitations. The other two firearms could also be forced into service but have even greater limitations so why bother. I am relatively certain that given some practice with either of your rifles that a 150 mtr shot should not be out of the question at all, and if you have really good eyes and shooting ability then even 200 mtrs is not impossible.

I don't like any of 'em.

But if that is all you have, it depends on the game and the range.

If either the Norinco or the MN can hit a tea saucer at 100 and pie plate at 200 yards then I'd go with the most accurate one for deer and moose out to 200.

I thought I was...... I gave my opinion and offered two possible options......

Would you care to point out your contribution?......

You haven't mentioned anything about the "Norinco m305", "Mosin M44" or "winchester 73 in 357 mag". Though, I get that fudd would dismiss without argumentation former non-sporterized military rifles... So is your concern about the weight ? The caliber's ballistic ? .30 rifles (or copy of thereof) that were good enough to target humans in combat must be good enough for pretty much hunting anything in North-America.
