Which red dot mount should I get for an SKS ?

Lets see.

I bought a rail for my sks from Russia that is similar to the magwedge one and it works really well it holds zero no problem
Also mounted a 1x4 russian scope that i got from Corwin when he had them
My sks is all Russian except the scope rings :)

I tried them all almost over the years and finally went with a Choate drill/tap receiver mount. I can still use stripper clips and the open sites if I want. I know you don't want to go that route but a drill and tap mount is the best option.IMO

I second that. Drill and tap for a side mount is the best if not the only option.
Couple of options:
- CrazyIvan sks mount, seems very solidly built, quick detach of optics.
- Choate, as the post suggested.
- Promag, what I have. Works great for red dot, rifle can be field stripped with the side mount in place. BUT, promag side mount is not picatinny rail. Scope rings will work but integrated 1 piece mount will not due to slot spacing.

Next best option is rear sight scout mount. But the you can only run a red dot and there is no backup iron.

What makes that one better than the rest ?

  • no permanent damage,
  • can use stripper clips,
  • holds zero,
  • don't need to uninstall for field strip like all those crappy rails and dust cover mounted contraptions

if you want to use a scope thou then drilled\tapped side mount is the way to go

such as mentioned here Choate mount or this mount from westrifle

I have found what I think would do the job better than anything I have seen so far, I would like to post a link but I doubt it will work.

Only I way to find out I suppose. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1jTaaMMd3Q&t=71s

There is a reason why they have the comments "turned off" for that video.....

If you do decide to buy that mount, be also sure to buy a set of "Zoomies" to check ur target downrange, a slob stopper to keep hot brass out of ur shirt collar and a splash of Peter Popoffs Miracle Spring Water to keep u hydrated throughout the day!

That is $20! There is a better way where you don't need to spend any money - use the sling that came with your SKS - here is a tutorial and proof how well it works

Although useful a sling is not a red dot.

someone gave a hint in the comments there - looks it wasn't understood.

read up about barrel harmonics - your red dot will no live long and I doubt it will hold zero due to vibrations

not to mention damaging the finish of barrel with that mount and potentially reducing bore diameter if you over-tighten which may lead to catastrophic results

I'm told the red dot in the video is a cheap Chinese red dot that has lasted over 800 rounds so far without any problems.

Are you serious about reducing the bore diameter by mounting a picatinny rail on the barrel ?

He shouldnt be.... its a ridiculous claim IMO. Go ahead and try the setup you want. IF it eventually fails just dont expect any of us to act surprised lol

I have tried it already with an old Bushnell TRS 25, it's working fine.

If it's stupid and it works, it ain't stupid. That looks like it would work just fine. Yes, it could change barrel harmonics, but these aren't free-floated anyway - who's to say the barrel is tuned. Mount it, fire groupings with a couple different ammo, find the best group and carry on.
