A very good friend has arranged for a rifle hunt for Deer on a Property within a half an hour from my House... it is a truly incredible score because of the Deer Numbers and large Bucks. The property has not been hunted in a long time and the Deer are as regular as clockwork appearing in a large pasture to browse every morning.
The Possibility of a 300-400 yard shot (Trophy Buck) is the likely scenario for this Hunt and I am torn between two rifles... the .270WSM or the 25WSSM. :?
This might be the year I can shoot a deer with a shotgun a rifle a bow and a muzzleloader... an Ontario-Slam 8)

For deer only the 25-06 would be a great choice.Basically the same ballistics as the 25wssm but with more variety of rifles and ammunition and it will probably still be around for a long time whereas the wssm may not.

Hey Stubs didn't you predict the failure of the WSM's as well

I really don't know what to use Adrian... that damn .25 shoots amazing with 115's and it is the most accurate long range rifle I own... the .270 is very accurate as well and has more energy... I just don't know. :?

Well Bud , I can't speak for the 25 because I just plain don't know a thing about it. But I sure could see the 270 flipping over one of them big horn brown spots way out there  ...BT

The WSM is still just a fad until places like crappy tire start selling the ammo  . Take the proven .270. Higher sectional density and a harder hitter = meat in the freezer.

I don't know who this ####### is that gets these "spots" but with all the friggin money you've poored into that WSM with the muzzel break, Leupold B&C 4.5-14x50 A/O and the custom H1000 Accubond loads I'd say ring that one out as you've already accomplished your 500 yards kill goal wit the 25wssm....that #######s spot again  If it were me, I'd have a tough time deciding between the 243 Win and the 270 Win....but I'm sure for ####s and giggles the 270 Win would definately be my go to as it has never drawn blood yet.

A 7MM Mag might be a very good choice for that situation.

For 300-400 yard shots at deer you need the retained energy contained in the 270WSM....too bad you don't have a .280 ...then you would have no doubt which one to take

Thanks Mumps... but I use a sluggun for them up close
Onno mentioned using the sluggun for fun... we are limited to shotguns only in most of the areas where I deer hunt. I get to hunt with Archery and Muzzle loaders as well and many years I have shot deer with all three. It would really be something if I could shoot a deer with all four types of firearms this year.
I have never done that before... :D
I have taken deer with rifles at mid-long range in the past... but both these rigs I am using now are serious 500 yard rifles
I would really like to put one of them (and myself) to the test... and this hunt and property is the ideal scenario for a long range deer 8)

I made a career best shot with the .25wssm... but I have killed quite a few coyotes at long range with the 270wsm... I am leaning hard towards the .270... horsepower rules at long range.

Ok, ok,

Go with the .25 wsm. (need a feild report though) From what I've read it's pretty cool deer round.

Never shot a deer with a slug, sounds like something new to look at
