Which Rifle for Whitetail?

Your line of argument is similar to this:

Your grandfather stalked closer because he wasn't a good enough shot to make the long shot.

So...instead of knocking someone when they ask for opinions (especially when they probably have killed more game than you have seen), offer them your opinion on the question. BigRedd didn't ask who killed what at what distance with a 30-30 or a 30-06.

Happy you got your kick in?

I've seen a lot, and taken a lot of game and learned from one of the best. I refer to myself as a 'young buck' in comparison to my Grandfather's age. He was 79 when he passed earlier this year in March...and he took his final deer last November at a range of 394 yards...with a .270wsm. He happened to be a military marksman in his younger days...but he also loved stalking his quarry due to the challenge and adrenaline rush involved.

So, if there's calibre recommendation needed for the long-range gang...then I guess the best hunter I ever knew gave the recommendation with the .270wsm. Plinking deer from afar just isn't my cup of tea...especially when I have two good legs still. Grandpa didn't.

Good hunting.

I don't think 1899 was putting down his grandfather J/C... just stating the obvious... hitting a deer and making a shot are two entirely different things

Exactly

Just because someone is making a long shot, it doesn't mean that they don't know how to close the distance. And just because someone sneaks up to 50 yards doesn't mean they couldn't make the long shot if required.

It seemed to me that the tone of your posts on this subject seemed dismissive and your attitude toward a different type of challenge to be judgemental... :(

I like your grandpa's style 8)

People, as hunters we need to be united by our similarities not divided by our differences. if you can shoot and kill deer at 300 plus yards good for you you're a better and more confident shooter than i. If you can stalk to 5 yards and head shot a deer with a .223 then good for you too. whatever floats your boat. i like stalking close just because where we hunt if they drop far away they are hard to find. and seldom get long shots. i find it a pain in the ass farting around searching for a carcass in the bushes and i get bored and restless sitting around. The take home message is this: They're both hunting and they're both legal and the anti hunters think we're #######s either way.

deer

Any thing over 300 yards i would take the 270WSM. I would take my 270WSM over my 25-06 in this case of possible 400 yard shots, sounds like you have a great spot to go, good luck in 2006.
