So I am getting a new scope for my 308.

My current setup ran out of elevation at about 700yrds. A 30 min sloped base is not an option for my rifle. Even a custom is problematic. So I have found a 10MOA base and I am trying to chose between the following two scopes:
1. Leupold MK4 4.5-14x 50 with a TMR reticle

2. Leupold MK4 6.5-20x 50 with a TMR reticle

There is only a $45 price difference betweent the two. The plan is to shoot this rig out to 1000yrds. My dilemma is that the 4-15 has 5 more minutes of elevation then the 6-20. So is it worth having a little more magnification and losing a small amount of elevation or is elevation more useful than the higher magnification.

Thanks for your input

the 10 MOA base will give you 100 extra inches of elevation at 1000 yards,

the MkIVs IIRC have 30mm maintubes and provide 178 inches of elevation adjustment at 100 yards or 1780 inches at 1000 yards ( i think this is from extreme low to extreme high -so how much you can use I don't know) It should have more elevation adjustment than your current rig (I assume). do you know how much?

5 minutes of elevation: 50 inches at 1000 yards.

Hey John C
The Leupold site says the scope has 70 or 75moa elevation depending on which one you look at. If you half that, assuming zero is at mid point that only gives me 35-37moa up from zero. When I was out shooting 175grns at 800yrds the other day I had to hold over a good 12 feet to hit the target. Currently I am using a VXIII 6.5-20 x 40 with 1" tube. It is good to 600 yrds and then tops out. Maynard, the Burris rings may be an option but we did have a guy who was having trouble with them sliding on him so I am concerned they may cause me more grief in the long run. Certainly are a less expensive option though.

I went through the a similar problem. Except my scope bottomed out at about a 100 yards. I have a bauch and lomb target scope. I bought z rings giving 40 minutes and shim the bases for another 13 minutes. My scope is 1.5 inches high now at 100 yards and with 30 minutes of elevation can get to 950 yards with my load.

As for the z rings problems. My rifle shoots .3 MOA so far no problems.

I use Burris rings with the offset inserts exclusively on my precision/LR rifles. They work as advertised. I am currently using Leupold scopes (1" tubes) in conjunction with the offset inserts. There is about 12 moa below the 100 yard zero, and about 45-50 moa above the 100 yard zero. Not only is this enough for 1000 yard rifles, but the upper end of travel on the elevation knob is never even close to the mechanical stop.

Of the 2 I would go the 6.5x20 ( that is what I have on my rifle) with a flat rail I can still get to 1000 no problem, also I find more magnification can help my accuracy, seeing the target better. The downside of more magnification is mirage is increased, this I think is a lesser concern

What rifle you got BTW?

Its a SIG SHR 970 in a STR setup, Mcmillan stock, Fluted target barrel. Good to hear positive feedback on the zee rings. thanks guys!

I have a 3.5-10 x 40 Long Range M3 on a 700P with a Near 25 moa tapered base. I can easily get to 1000 yds plus with that setup. With the M3 you can also get to 1000 in less than one revolution of the elevation turret with the adjustments being 1 moa per click rather than 1/4 per click.

The M3 is a great Tactical aplication scope, but A 1 MOA per click is not a precision scope, at 1000 yrds, that is 10+ inches which is a fair bit of hold over if you only need to adjust 5". The MRk 4 LRT 6.5-20 with a TMR rectical gives you a much finer adjustment at long range being a 1/4" MOA per click. If I were shooting at the 6' tall by 10" wide targets in a certain situation I would love the M3. If I were shooting at a 8" diameter target I would prefer the 1/4" adjustment. The leupold mark 4 scopes are a great line of scopes, we have a couple in our closet sitting on some nice rifles.

Just an opinion.

Go for the Mk4! You won't be dissapointed.

They're both MkIV!:runaway:

I'd say the 4.5-14x. No need for more elevation at intermediate ranges. But do what makes you feel good. I'd recommend a tapered base though. Try a Farrell 20MOA. I'm quite fond of mine.

Thanks all for your input. I ordered the 6.5-20 after all. The base is a real problem however. Near MFG thought they had a 10 MOA but it doesn't fit and he has no time for a custom. Farell doesn't have one either that will fit but might be able to do a custom in about 4 months or so.
