So my dad asked me to pick him up a new semi .22 and handed me the latest cabelas catalogue with a Marlin model 795 and a Mossberg 702 circled. Being that he's 75 I was pretty tickled that
he wants to get a new .22. Any one have anything to say about these two rifles? One better that the other?

Cheers

We've been talking about the marlin 60 in another thread, about quality control lacking compared to the older ones etc. Still, we agree that for a cheap 22, the marlin with a bit of polishing and deburing offers great value and accuracy for the price compared to say a 10/22 that often needs upgrades ($) to shoot well. The 795 is just a mag version of the tube fed 60. Both can be had for about $200 new. Milarm has a couple in stock.

I've been happy with my 795, cheap and accurate. You can get some aftermarket stuff for it but if you are looking for something to customize spend a bit more and get a 10/22.

I have a predessor of the marlin 60....990L. most accurate semi in the field that i ever held. eats everything and thousands thru her without a hiccup. Regular cleaning every 1000-1500 carts. just read the forum on 22s and see what is with the Ruger. series.

Sounds like your father is asking what kind of new 22 you would like when he's passing it on.

Haha, I hear you, He's already mentioned that but I've got a few including a TC Classic that I love. We have a local .22 shoot/informal competition, hunting buddy's and there wives, and he decided he wants a new .22 to enter.
Nice to see our competitive nature doesn't diminish with age even though our eye sight does...:)

I'm here from the previously noted marlin thread.

I'm guessing since you said your dad is in his 70's, he's not looking for a gun he can tactical up and spend another $1000 on parts and dress it up(ruger 10/22).

From the factory they both need a bit of work, the marlin needs a couple hours of filing, and deburring. The ruger needs money and time. The mossberg I've never shot, but I haven't heard great things about other than it has a low price.

That's an easy question, Marlin 795 is your answer! I have one, great shooter....accurate...and bargain basement price~what else do you need!? Your dad (at that age) will appreciate the light weight too.

Marlin 795. $160. Very accurate from my experience. Shoots as good as the brother-in-laws heavy barrel 10/22. There are a few aftermarket stocks available. Stick and drum mags available. Bolt hold open. I would suggest if you do get one to clean it before shooting it.

Marlin 795 or 60 are both great little guns.I just bought a 60 for the grandson in the spring and between him and I have probably put 3000 rounds through it with no problems at all.

Spent the afternoon trying to find the Marlin locally. I hate paying shipping. Anyway Lebaron is suppose to call me when they get a shipment in.
Thanks for the feedback gents.

That's actually a crackin' deal. For ease and simplicity I'd order this one, and it's a CGN sponsor.

Well I may just give them a call...

It's hard to see what the sight looks like in the pictures. Father asked if he could get a semi-buckhorn for it...old school. Anyone have much knowledg on the open sight after market for the 795?

I am happy with my 795 accurate light and shoots snything except mine is a little picky on remington rounds odd ftf if i try and shoot too fast .
But eats bulk federal and blaser like crazy.

cheers

The regular 795 has a regular notched leaf rear sight, but the stainless and deluxe models (M60 dlx) have a folding semi buckhorn. If you wanted to upgrade I'm sure you could order the folding semi buckhorn that is on the deluxe model marlin 60, it's blued and should be a straight swap. Western gun parts probably has it.
Otherwise there is always tech sights, which I'd like to use someday. They're a nice M1 style rear peep and winged post type. Williams makes decent sights for it too, as does Marbles if he wants a real nice buckhorn.

Tech sights, also an expensive option, but fully adjustable for wind and elevation.
