Which semi auto ?

I think you will find on most Clay courses weather it be Trap Skeet or Sporting Clays. The Beretta 391 is the most popular. Gas operated = less recoil and more reliabilty with lite target loads. That said I shoot Win. SX 1's and wouldn't trade them for anything.

You are going to spend a lot more time shooting your gun than cleaning it. The Beretta 391 is a little more complicated to clean but a nicer gun to shoot than the Benelli or any of the other recoil/inertia operated guns. The Auto 5 is a dated sysytem that is left in the dust by the Beretta, Benelli, Winchester and modern Brownings. The Auto 5 is rarely seen on the clay fields and rightfully so.

With all the new semi autos on the market, which one is still best for clay shooting recreationally ?

If you just mean a couple of rounds of skeet or trap, rather than competitively, you really don't need to limit yourself to "the Best". An A5 is my go-to skeet gun, Mssbrg 930 for trap, wife uses an 1100 20 gauge, kids an 11-87. They all will do the job well. What is more important than which gun is the best is which gun fits you best. And which you like to shoot. A Benelli may truthfully be 'the best' gun for clays, but it may not fit you, it may be out of your budget, you may not like it's look, recoil feel or balance.

If you can, go to a shooting club and try as many guns as possible.

Having shot at leat a dozen different Clubs, primarily Skeet, Sporting, 5-Stand & a bit of
FITASC, I can confirm that the Beretta 391 is clearly in the the majority for competitors shooting auto-loaders. The new Beretta A400 is starting to show up fairly regularly as well.

There are two 391's in the cabinet at present. After many years, Remington 58's,
1100's, 11-87's and Winchester SX-1's, I can confirm that both of these 391's have been the most reliable of all.

:agree:

I just got started in the clay sports and I decided on the Beretta Urika ii 391 with parallel stock. Very nice to shoot, and I have used it for trap, skeet and sporting clays.

I am leanning towards the new beretta A400 xtreme in black synthetic. The gun seemed to fit me good at the store. They only had the cammo version though. This may just be my next " do it all " shotgun.

More reliable than a SX-1.?? 391 is a great gun agree but they are no x1:) not even close. Send the sx1 barrel to Briley and have tubes fitted and you have a gun to last you your lifetime. Plus win/64 will let you join his x1 cult. I had two 391's and 6 sx1, kept 4 of the x1's to this day and replaced the 391's with browning golds. I would like to see a few 391's that pumped out a couple 100 thousand rounds like many x1's have and see what they look like for wear and tear.New buffer and a few springs and the x1 is ready for the next 100 thousand.
