Hi everyone, I am in the market for a new 12 and could use some advice. I was leaning towards a pump (probably 870), but now I'm thinking I might as well spend a few more bucks and get a semi. However I can't afford anything that's expensive (defined as over 600 bucks plus tax in my case). I like the idea of a recoil-driven semi instead of gas-driven. 3.5" chamber not necessary (but do want 3). So I'm basically looking at three options (with Cabelas Canada current online price listed):

1) Benelli Nova 3.5, 3 tubes, $469.99
2) Benelli Super-Nova 3.5, 3 tubes, $599.00
3) Stoeger Model 1200, 5 tubes, $539.99

All three have 28" VR barrels and black synthetic stocks, which I want.

Anybody here compare these head to head? I'll of course go to the store and check fit, etc., before making any final choice, but I would like to see what people think.

Is the Super-Nova that much better than the Nova, to justify spending an extra $130? I thought the Stoeger was a "cheap Benelli", but it seems to fall in the middle here. Biggest difference I see is being limited to 3" shells (as noted above, not a big deal), but it comes with two additional chokes.

I don't mind spending the extra money on the Super-Nova if folks think it's worth it. This will be my general-duty all-around shotgun, at least until I can afford to buy more :)

Thanks in advance everyone,

Jeff

Personally, unless there were a very specific new gun that I wanted, I would look for a good used one by a major manufacturer, with a good reputation. Should be able to get a fine gun for less than any of the prices you have listed - and if it is a private sale, no tax.

the nova and super novas are pump guns if you ant a cheap semi the the reminton knock off is the bakal thy are good for the price the mosberg ad stoger are your next choice both make a reasonable priced semi DUTCH

I've only heard good things about the Baikal MP153

I have both the mossberg 930 and 935 and both are very good guns for the money. They are mid price range but are worth the money.

Baikal MP-153! I haven't shot any of the other models you mentioned but I got mine BARELY used for $500 +shipping, and they aren't much more then that new. I have a little video of my Baikal on youtube, check that out.

I love the thing, 250+ rounds of all kinds of different ammo and still no malfunction, that's without cleaning it mind you. Comes with 4 chokes, shoots 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" shells and it's your choice of synthetic or wood furniture.

....or if you just want a semi thats alot of fun just for the experiance then i would suggest a browning auto 5.... prices range from $150 to $600 for most i have seen in the EE... roomie has one and aside from the horrid angle of the stock its pretty interesting to shoot.

Stoeger makes some great semi auto guns for the price range.
I bought a Stoeger 2000 for my first 12g semi when i didn't have much money a few years back. It was $500 or something. It jammed 2-3 shell out of prolly 1500.
My Beretta extreama II has jammed the same percentage i'm sure.

hey dutch hunter the remington spartan is the knock off of the baikal that remington gets baikal to make for them.I have i baikal mp153 i paid 500 plus tax new and i have never had a single problem with it.

I have seen one MP-153. Too bad it's a bad experience.

The barrel is not straight! It bend a little in the middle. I don't know how that gun passed QC. Or maybe the owner used it to open a door? I just don't know.

We've got some Yildiz semi's and pumps coming in soon. i hope the quality is as good as their break actions. If so, they will be great guns for the money.

I could be wrong, but as I understand it, Spartan's are Baikal's just re-branded. They aren't knockoffs.
