Which shotgun should I have?

A little background first. My shotgun shooting experience has been buying one then going out and just figuring it out. I have owned a lemon Mossberg, an 870 and currently a SXP.

I have been debating selling the SXP in favor of a break action because I am over polymer and prefer wood, a pump is not required for my needs and cheaper/equal value break actions can be had.

I use a shotgun for two main things. The first being informal trap shooting, IE. hand thrower on crown land. The second being generic screwing around. I also have an interested in getting into small game hunting but have not taken steps towards that yet.

What would the gun nutz recommend doing and/or buying that is equal or cheaper value than the SXP? I like the cheaper option so I can spend more on ammo

Should I go with SXS, single or O/U? Should I just keep the SXP?

Will I have a problem with fixed choke shotguns? I have only used full in the SXP any way. I am not to concerned with gun fit because I don't do any serious shooting. Any advice or opinions is welcome.

I personally grew up with a Remington 812 and a cooey 84, both in 20 gauge. Both are entry level shotguns and can be had in decent condition for under 200, all of mine were fixed chokes and while ok for upland hunting they're were no good for steel and waterfowl hunting due to the fixed full chokes. While great to carry all day the ability for follow up shots has kept me from returning to a single shot, id keep the sxp with removable chokes as its a much more versatile platform. Slugs and buck shot aren't a lot of fun through a single shot either.

You will not find a decent quality new O/U or SxS, for the price of an SXP. For that price, you will be looking at used low end guns, or a little better quality guns that are in poor condition. If you want a break action for a low price, look for an older Cooey or Winchester equivalent single shot.

I saw a bunch of SXS on tradex. Are they all going to be junk?

It depends on the price. At SXP prices, they will be lower end or in rougher condition, or they will have issues. And of course you need a shotgun that fits you, which is a gamble if you can't shoulder it.

I wouldn't hesitate to gamble on one of their JP Sauer and Sohn or Merkel doubles. They're all priced pretty reasonably which makes me thing they must be East German guns (not even sure if that matters) but I wouldn't hesitate to drop a few hundred on one of them to see how they are.
