Which SKS to buy?

I have been thinking about getting an SKS ever since the Yugo M59/66's came out years ago from Marstar, but just kept putting it off. These days I am starting to appreciate the value of a rifle like the SKS which is cheap to buy, cheap to feed, and is fun. I have been reading up on the SKS, and I am getting dizzy, and bogged down in all the details in trying to decide which rifle would be best for me.

The bottom line for me:

- rifle made of quality materials
- nice fit and finish
- new or unissued (not refurbished, etc..)
- uses all standard SKS parts that are easy to find

I know there are, Yugos which are all surplus, Russians which are all surplus, and Chinese of which some are commercial, and some are surplus. Then within those countries there are certain factories which may or may not produce nicer rifles, and then certain years which may or may not have yielded nicer rifles. I think that all this info overload was part of the reason why I shyed away from the SKS in the past lol

So what would you SKS masters recommend? :D

Thanks!

Are you buying it to shoot it or look at it

If your going to shoot it, then get the wood stock one for 180 or the laminate at 216 bucks, now this is at Le Barons, might not be your favorite store, then again it don't have to be, there are many now selling these rifles....

figure out what you want it for, and spend accordingly....

I bought the one for 216, and plan on shooting the crap out of it, not to store it in some gun cabinet and look at it.....

This is my opinion

I plan to have it as a shooter. Collector value means absolutely nothing to me.

Aren't the Russian SKS's at LeBaron refurbs?

Collectors look for unissued unfired, and most of us who want shooters will not pay more for them.

IMO, you are looking for an unissued unrefurbed Russian and I know two places that sell them, more coin than refurbs but you want new/unissued.

westrifle.com (website) in vancouver....he'll probably chime in soon

weimajack - check the EE http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=439132

Yes, I believe they are

hell some are all number matching, some are not

mine is not, but I purchased it to shoot the crap out of it, doubt I will outlast it...

it's cheap the ammo is cheap, get it and have fun....

this is when I got it, I am in the process of stripping the stock and redoing it, I just wanted to make it look nicer, and the stock to feel smoother in my hands, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't do anything to it at all.

Anyone know which of the Russians that westrifle is selling are refurb and which are unissued/brand new?

Would these Russian SKS rifles be better than the commercial Norincos?

Yes I'd say almost ANY Russian SKS' are better then the Norcs and look better too! Just talk to the guys at westrifle.....super helpful and they knwo thier #### and they have LOTS of real nice SKS' to choose from.

In this house we have two Chicom SKS's. One is a SKS-D and one is a standard model. Factory code is 9696 in an oval. The 'D' is a lot of fun and runs flawless. The standard model is reasonably accurate (with decent ammo and a rest) and has had the stock refinished with a few coats of Tru Oil. No complaints with either.

Russian SKS scale worst to best

Refurb black bolt- Mixed parts and every thing is spray painted black, Its a good shooter but it looks crappy and the parts may not fit well since they are a mixed batch. "this ones a pure shooter"

Refurb silver bolt- metal is all matching and looks great "shooter or collector"

Non refurb- same as refurb silver bolt but with no refurb stamp and stock is 100% original "collectors gun"

If you want a really nice looking shooter get a refurb silver bolt.

If you're going to shoot it, no point in getting an unissued non refurb. The refurb was done at the arsenal, they are to factory specs. And there are zillions around, looking for a collector SKS might pay off for your great-grandkids.

Just get a good quality Russina and some ammo and have fun with the thing!

You can send me an email to contact@westrifle.com or info@westrifle.com. I will help you choose the one that you want. There is no brand new ones available as it was made in 1949 - 1955 . I handpick mine so you would get a good quality rifle. Very good shooters and it is not just mine opinion ( some people reported 2 MOA) All Silver bolt and matching numbers. Send me an email and I will try to help you out.

Yes, no point in getting an unissued then go out shooting the heck of it when you can keep it as an unissued, unfired collector's rifle. Besides, you can spend the extra money saved on a crate of ammo.

I have a refurb that has matching serial on all pieces but no refurb markings. Beware, refurb markings will not always be there. The best way is just to physically check the rifle yourself before making the purchase.

Mine is, so what?? now it's like new! ;) Mine is from '52 but has a new laminate stock of a beautiful light colour, chrome line bore and all parts are matching. I took it apart last night for the first time to get all the extra oil off and after some struggle, cursing and sweating getting the trigger group back in place (I had the safety off! :S) I feel more intimante with it and think I'm going to have lots of pleasure with it at the range. :adult::eek: :p

I would buy yourself a brand new never been fired Norinco!! Frontier has them right now for a pretty good price I think !
I have shot both Russian and Norc and to me there is no difference , bottom line is , is that its an sks , no matter what manufacture or country they are made in they are a plinker and not a precision rifle although I will say the yugo ones do seem to be alot nicer than any of the other ones I have shot but seem to be hard to find! You just have to take them for what they are and shoot the heck out of them !

Let's face it, you could have the most perfect, beautiful, unissued SKS in the world, but its value as a true collectors piece is trashed by the government the second it entered Canada and the mag was mangled. Some are definitely nicer than others, but its still a shoot and enjoy weapon!

What can I say vote Liberal again and then they will limited to 3 or maybe 1 bullet rule or better close the border completely just like USA did for Russian weapons. All it is politics, to us it makes no difference 10 or 5. We have with a rifle that is All.
Again about collectors grade you pay more but you get quality rifle. They do look better as for shooting I could not say anything as mine unfired. Customers report to me that it is a very nice grouping.

Trade Ex and Moving Target also have the new Chi-Com Military SKSs
