So this is what ive got to choose from in terms of wolf bullets. Most shots would be within 100 yards. EDIT - This wolf will be skinned, so I'd liek to not destroy too much fur on exit

62gr Federal Fusions
40gr Hornady Varmint Express
55gr Hornady Varmint Express
55gr Hornady VMAX
55gr Sellier & Bellot Soft points
55gr Remington Power Lokt Hollow Point (this is what im thinking)
40gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertips

I use the Remington core-lokt 55g PSP on coyotes. Most end up with a pencil sized entrance and a nickle sized exit, havn't lost one yet (KNOCK ON WOOD). My rem 700 shoots these bullets really well so I just stuck with them, not sure what they would be like on a wolf though.

Never shot a wolf, but I would stick with what I know - 55 gr Vmax or my 55 gr Calhoons. Little hole in, no exit, and nothing but jello in between.

they'll all do a great job, use the ones that shoot the best. In my .223, I like 50 gr V-max over Benchmark at about 3400 fps. Great all around load for varmints and predators.

If you have a bigger caliber, I'd use that.
If you must use a 223, I'd go with the 62gr. Fusions.

I suppose I could use a bigger gun, but I dont want the exit wound to be huge, and I dont want to use FMJs.

I should mention these are Eastern Wolves, which rarely top 90 lbs, more often they are the size of a large yote

Just out of curiosity, how would a 69gr Sierra HPBT work on one? I've developed a really nice load for my Savage .223, but I don't know if being a hollow point is enough.

the traditional round for wolf was the 243 winchester, with somewhere in the 75 grain range plugs- but this is western canada-

I hunt for revenue. Sewing is a concern for me. I use a 218 bee, 223 and a 223wssm and swear by the 55gr fmj a good heart lung shot or shoulder on wolves, go for the pumpkin on a coyote dido for foxes. I cannot advocate the use of ballistic tip typed bullet so much energy is transfered on initial impact I have seen soft ball sized holes which really takes away from the value of the fur. Everyone has there opinion and value everyone I see but the FMJ works for me in the north country.

His number of 90lbs is about 3x the size of most coyotes. Wolves are a lot taller than a coyote, but not a lot thicker. A bullet that scrambles the insides of a coyote will also work on wolf with proper shot placement.
