Whitetail hunting with dogs????????

Hounds deer and young fellers

I can remember growing up in Ontario, waiting for the deer season, all the uncles had a beagle or a hound of some sort. Ours was a blue tick. I remember picking him out of a litter and watching him grow into a great deer hound. There is nothing like the excitement of the hounds going through the cedar swamps and bogs flushing the deer. It makes my heart pound just thinking of it. It is a sport onto itself. All good houndsmen remember leaving an old plaid coat or something where the hounds went into a swamp and one got lost....and sitting around the supper table listening for the return. And how happy we were to find the young hound the next morning lying on the jacket. We still hunt deer with hounds, 50 years of it...but we dont hunt on sundays..the next county over cant use dogs, but they hunt sundays. It certainly hasnt hurt the deer population, 6 out of 7 hunters got doe tags this year, and we have more deer now than ever. Its just another style of the hunt...and those deer are cute, most often losing the dogs in the bush anyhow. I for one have nothing but pleasant memories of hearing the hounds in the swamps...or the hardwoods.
