Whitetail with .223?

you missed the whole point entirely. do us a favour. find a tall building and jump off.

Wow, a whole month here and resorting to insults already, 3 aimed at Westicle, simmer down, you'll enjoy the site more.

If you notice all Westicle called you was "unethical", yes, a poor choice of words considering I understood what you meant but Westy likes to bait and stay low on the radar, still playing the game but doesn't cross the border of the rules of the site, thats why he's still here and has been right from the original site.

Guys, if I remember correctly the last .223 thread on hunting with them got locked as well right? This one seems to be well on it's way, it's going nowhere, turn it around or it's gonna be in the pile with the other .223 big game hunting threads.;)

Anyone using a 338 or 375H&H is not hunting for meat or doesn't know how to shoot.

Id be on the side of the argument that'd be saying a 223 or 22-250 would damage less meat then a 338 or 375

I shot a .222 on the weekend for the first time and had a blast.

My ten year old loved it as well.

How close are the .222 and the .223?

If they are close, its out for deer for me.

Besides,it's illegal for big game in AB, so what's the point of over thinking it?

I heard something from a friend once who said it was legal in Manitoba to shoot deer with a 22-250. Maybe he was pulling my leg too. Can any Manitobans tell us if they are allowed to or not?

the 222 lags behind the 223 by about 200 fps, given equal barrel length

most 222's are twisted with 1:14 tubes, which shoot bullets up to 53 gr. pretty good. You may have trouble with longer, 55 gr. to 60 gr. bullets.

Looking at the different factory 222 loads by Hornady, Remington, Winchester, and Federal, nothing I see would inspire ANY confidence in me, when going after deer.

Handloading wise, I see the 45 gr. Barnes XBT as the only real 222 deer bullet option. Short and light enough that it should work in a 1:14 twist.

What makes 22 cals work on deer is proper bullets. The farther you lean on the small side of the 22's, the smaller the list of usable bullet options get...

The 223 and 22-250 is a popular deer choice in some of the southern states. Keep in mind though that their deer are a LOT smaller than ours.

I really don't see any reason whatsoever why someone would use a .224 on deer though. The various 6mm's are far superior - every bit as accurate, as flat, and still nearly zero recoil.

I've got a 223 on the way:cool: ........might just whack a Bear with it to show it can be done  :D
Yes it's Legal here :)
A good shot, good Bullet, pop the lungs.....& Get out your knife !
Everytime ;)

Agreed

Thanks Tod

The .222 looks like a great rifle for my boys but becuse of army surp. I think the .223 will be more practical.

I agree with your dad 223 is good on the white tailsit's done all over the US by experienced hunters and in the Atlantic provinces as well isn't optimal ? no but I would not hesitate to do it if it was legal

.223 on deer

If you shoot it lots due to ammo cost then it's more likely to go where you want than the bigger one you rarely shoot.Giter-done.

PB,

It is in fact quite legal to take big game animals in MB with a 22-250. Here is the quote from the regs:

Centrefire Rifles
A centrefire rifle may be used to hunt big game. A centrefire rifle of .23 calibre or less is not recommended.

"Not recommended" being the key words there.

OK, I'm lazy and havn't read the whole thread, but here's my opinion. A military round, as I've been told, has an additional purpose besides killing. A dead enemy can lay there on the ground, eliminating one enemy. A wounded one, as is more likely by a smaller caliber weapon, takes 3 enemies out of action, One wounded and two to carry him.

That is the rationale behind smaller calibers for warfare....and they are cheaper than 7.62.........

I'm sure there would be times when as a soldier, you would want the enemy soldiers to die quickly, and not be able to fire their weapon when wounded from a smaller bullet. If I were a soldier, I would have a few of my own handloads loaded to the nuts with vmax or something. If I were to get caught, I would probably get skidded or get stuck peeling potatoes.

Then again a 150gr .30 caliber doesn't always drop deer right away. They are tough critters.

How do you know this to be true?

How many animals have you shot with a 338 or 375?

How many deer have youshot withthese calibers? What was your experience with shooting der with these calibers?

Plese tell us the velocities and bulles used in your experiences.:)

Captain deadly has had enough of this... he nearly ripped himself a new camel toe when his cape got caught in the phone booth door.
