Thank-you for all the comments.I live in Manitoba and am pretty sure there are also no rules concerning the sks for hunting deer. I am using MFS soft point ammo. with open sights and have no problem hitting paper plate at 100 yards. I wouldn't attempt a shot too much farther so I know my limitations with the accuracy portion. Just wasn't sure of the knockdown power of this round. Very nice fiddler,well done.

Who runs around with it fixed? Most people keep it folded 99% of the time as it is part of the gun and IMO completes the look

A lot of people want to compare 7.62x39 to 30-30, but its not a good comparison because most people hunt with 170gr 30-30 and not the 125gr 7.62x39. There is about 30% difference in energy, which by the way is a lot when using an already light load to begin with. I've loaded X39 to 170 gr with not bad success, but I don't know anyone who uses a 125gr 3030 for hunting. If you compare the same grain of bullet, it makes a fair comparison, but generally no one uses 125gr 30-30 and often can't find them in the stores. And on the other hand, I've not seen a commercial 170 gr X39. The 125gr commercial soft points in x39 are quite light and just becuase you can hit paper at 150 yards doesn't mean it has much killing energy left. Rather than take this as fact, try shooting into a few phone books at 150 yards and see for yourself, not a lot of penetration left. IMO, 100 is just about max for that round.

there is no restriction on SKS`s in Ontario, there is nothing that prevents anyone from using any rifle with a bayonet and there is a caliber restriction for southern Ontario as previously mentioned.
With the hunting reg summary on line and the actual legislation on Ontario`s e-laws site (search under f for the fish and wildlife conservation act) if you dont know about the regs...
We have had a couple of deer killed with SKS and factory hunting loads at my former deer camp, all at close range. Enjoy your hunt!

AND...The caliber restriction in Southern Ontario is for SMALL GAME not deer. If you can leagally hunt deer in your area with a center fire rifle, you can hunt them with ANY non restricted center fire rifle of your choice. you could use a .17 fireball or a 50 BMG, not that either is the right choice.

I find my Mosin 91/30 isn't near long/heavy enough when moose hunting, so I like to attach that cruciform bayonet for that extra reach, you know, in case I start to feel stabby.

Yep - the SKS works for deer!
I shot my first deer with an SKS. I used 125gr Remington PSP's. We were hunting over dogs and the deer was running. I shot it at about 40yds. It piled up in the trees about 40yds after that.
