Just call it a case of sour grapes on my part. Must be the lack of sunshine or something!
What can I say, mate.
It's 22 C, sunny with a nice breeze.;)
Oh, sorry, am I rubbing it in?:D
Hey, at least you don't have Draconian gun laws and there's plenty of big game.

Never really thought about owning a magnum.

I suppose they'd kick some ass further on down the line, but I read that magnum barrels have half the life of a "traditional caliber" rifles (all depends on how many rounds are shot of course). Any truth to that?

In terms of reloading, I would think magnums use way more powder, but even then the amount of powder you use is relative to your caliber.

Just some thoughts

:D Probably is :D
St. Andrews i recognise (Scotland) that is with all the sunshine, BUT, i notice your avatar says St. Andrews, mb

Never heard of that  Where is that :p :)

Aside from my .17 HMR, I have only standard chamberings and have not found myself to be disadvantaged with them from 6.5x55 to 45-70 govt. I may consider one of the classic magnums - 300 H&H, 375 H&H, etc. for sentimental reasons, but, at the present time, I'm having a lot of fun and enjoyment with the standard chamberings.

:D EXACTLY :D

'Little Guy Senerio'

Whatever you lack in everyday life,----size,height,ability,attitude,knowledge & not least of all,confidence:) :) :) -----Shoot a Magnum:p :p :p

I bought a 300 win mag stevens 200 last summer because i wanted options. I can reload it down with 165 grn interbonds at 30-06 levels for low recoil or if i ever get a grizzly tag here i can load it with 200 grain bullets or better and still get a decent velocity and it will still work on moose from the same rifle without overloading the cartridge.
And yes i am currently grinding down a limbsaver pad for it cuz its just not fun to shoot alot of rounds at the range,my shoulder hurts.

I have only had one, and the British would not even call it a magnum but a good medium bore, the classic 375 H&H. Too bad I didn't buy a gun that was as classic as the caliber or I'd still have it.:(

I am looking to get a 300 H&H, whether I build it out of one of my own or trip over another one, it will be more than enough for all I will chase on this continent.:p I mean, if Doug and SuperCub have one, shouldn't we all?

As for the modern magnums, they are only created to keep up the sales of firearms, for these whiz bang whipper snappers.

Don't worry Kombi, let 'em at these new super duper whiz bang guns, it will only help the price of the classic ones stay where they are at instead of inflating further and further.;)

The 375 H&H is properly described as "375 Belted, rimless magnum!":D :D :D

Currently I do not have a magnum described as such; although some may consider the 505 Gibbs as one!

I will be rebarrelling one of my P14's although to 300 Win Mag in the future!

Two "magnums" - a .264 Win Mag and a .300 Win Mag. But mostly I have 6.5x55mm's, 7mm-08's, .308's, .30-06's & a .270 and a 7x57mm... :D

You know, I find all of this very interesting.
For example, one person posted on another thread that they don't use 160gn bullets for their 264 Win Mag but would happily use them on their 6.5x55?!
How does that work?
And then there's the theories I've heard that a 300 Win Mag operates best using 180gn bullets.
Why own a magnum then?
Isn't the aim of a magnum to exploit the full possiblities of a particular cal?
A 30-06 works great with 180s too and puts a fair bit less stress on the projectile upon impact.....i.e. it doesn't require a premium bullet to hold together.
I seem to hear a fair few complaints about certain bullets because they don't hold up on game when the distance is 100yds or under.
And the reason, you ask? The velocity of the bullet is too high.
I am pleased to see the response on this poll and list.
Obviously it is something people feel strongly about.

I guess your right i dont need a magnum that will hurt my shoulder.I can always use my sks for bear hunting,:) its got a nice bayonet i can sharpen up and make pointy and save on ammo:cool: and it kicks less than my 30/30:p My best count on grizzlys was south of tumbler ridge in the springtime, saw 13 in one day going up a mountain top above the treeline to look for a radio repeater that blew off it in a wind storm. Yes we had the standard 30-06 with us and felt well armed but people always want that little bit more.

Point taken.
But there are non-magnums that would give you superior bear defence to the 30-06.
What about a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 with some decent bullets or a 9.3x62?
Even a 35 Whelen with the right load isn't bad proposition, although admittedly a 375H&H is more comforting.
Once again though, bullet choice seems to be a bigger consideration than bullet velocity.
I guess what I'm asking is why use a magnum if it's unnecessary?
I don't hunt dangerous game and I'd certainly be armed with a jaw rattler if I was, probably a 416 Rigby.
The problem is magnums have become regarded as a panacea for a range of hunting deficiencies and they clearly aren't.

Wow! Did you touch a nerve or what, Kombi! Great post! I'll have to take next week off to read all the LAS! :D
Yep, I've got one - Tikka M695 in 300 WM. My favourite rifle in my collection!

A 45/70 would be good for bears as well for close up,but we also have mule and whitetail deer here as well and a 300 win mag can reach out alot farther before having to worry about bullet trajectory. To be honest i have never had to shoot anything past 150 yards but i would sure be tempted if that buck was 350 yards out. Last year i was out hunting grouse with my 12 gauge SxS and i carry some brenneke slugs with me for bears.
One black bear popped out of the bush about 100 yards ahead of me and i had my bear tag with me but i just couldnt get any closer and it was just too far for me to shoot and be certain .I look at my 300 win as like a car with a gas pedal , i can coast at 3/4 speed like the non-magnum 30.06 or step it up by changing my reloads and go with heavier bullets than the 30.06 is meant for but the 300 wm handles fine. If all i had to hunt here was deer and coyotes i'd just get a 25-06. You can load the 30-06 down to 30-30 levels but it gets touchy loading it up to 300 wm levels. Hope i explained it a little better.
