Your almost better off asking who doesn't hunt with a .308... I would hazard a guess that a poll would show it as the number one choice, maybe a smidgen behind the .30/06, but I don't think so.
Your top ten would likely be;
.308
.30/06
.270
.30-30
.243
.280
7-08
7 RM
.300 WM
Maybe still the .303 Brit "OR,"
Maybe enough have graduated from high school for the 6.5 Creedmoor to squeak in there.
It’s funny, early in my gun buying career I always said I would never own a 308 because it was so boring! But, somehow over the years I’ve come to own three!
Used many 30'06 to hunt with, have a 308 AB3 in walnut that I take out now, light and accurate.
Even with the 6.5CM craze, I have a half dozen 6.5x55 I would use before the 6.5CM to hunt with, zero gains with the new wonder cartridge over the 120+ year old 6.5x55 for hunting.
Had one and sold it. I don’t miss it. I have a PR rifle in 308, strictly a training gun. For hunting I actually prefer my 30-30, 6.5x55, 7mm-08, and my 35 Whelen for big stuff. 30-30 for thick woods and everything else for longer range shots.
And just to add to the 6.5cm hype train, 308 is just as accurate for any hunting ranges, and you won't see much difference on targets our to impractical hunting ranges in the 700m range.
Down to one rifle in 308, a Brno Effect single shot... fabulous combination. Accurate and hard hitting. There's also a huge selection of quality factory hunting ammo to choose from.
When I finished trade school in 2012 I decided to buy myself a go anywhere do anything rifle. Ended up with a lh tikka in 308. Loaded with 150ttsx at very near 3000fps it really is a do anything rig. Worked just dandy on moose as well as deer last year.
