Who here hunts with 308?

I think the farthest shot I've made on any game animal was with the .308 but it isn't my go to caliber these days.
But if I could only take one rifle off the rack in an emergency it would be the .308

I dont at the moment but i would not hesitate for general hunting down under also, or deer of any size in general.

i sort of split the 308 in the end due to rifle availability at the time of having the funds, 7mm 08 got a Go in form of the kimber.... which i latter got ahold of a .308win barrel for (so there is a future)

an then the Left hand gun i got was a 30-06 and it with 180gr hot loads is my limit of confidence all round... so its proberly doing what a 308 does anyway :)

for what its worth, for hunting i was using 150gr C&P for all of the mid to small deer species, an using a bonded 150gr for the larger Species of Sambar. they were either Accubonds or Woodleighs both to perfect application- i never felt the need to use 180gr in the .308.
in the 7mm 08 ive found 140gr Bonded to be the best as a One load gun, (woodleigh) though the same 160gr would give more insurance on bigger deer but honestly that 140-160 in either .308 or 7mm are same same, just the little 308 case has a bigger hole an looks kinda cool....but then again the 7-08 has a sweet lil hole.. same same.:ar15:

After a lot of research I decided to go with a .308 as my hunting rifle. Started with a tradition rifle Tikka t3x ctr (I do a lot of bush walking and and generally shooting closer range so like the shorter barrel) I ordered an MRA maverick and am going to build that thing with a 12.5" barrel. Should be a really cool bush gun in theory. We'll have to see how it goes lol. Putting a linear comp to try to reduce the noise a bit

I make a collection of gaz chainsaw, all makes, only thing i want, is it must be between 45 and 55 cc, i make an analogy with my 308 rifles. JP.

I like it.
I hunt deer with a 375 ruger.
I also get my fire wood with a ms 460 lol.

Over kill I like it.

My go to is a 308, Little Ruger American all weather compact, but this year the 308 is going to hangout in the safe and wait for the real nasty rain blowing up hill days.
This year I’m going to try my best to only use a couple of recently purchased old 94’s in 32WinSpl, so far all practice shooting this year has been strictly open sights only.
I will double check the scope on the 308 in September just so it is ready to go if need be, or I could remove the scope from the Model Seven in 308 as it has irons on it. Choices, there are always choices.
I’m liking the 18” barrels on these compacts, the 308 still preforms very well minus 4” of barrel.

My .308 Win bolt rifle is my go to cartridge. Very accurate, not a lot of recoil and has all the terminal energy I need at my typical hunting distances. It's boring, it works, period.

Have a Sako A7 .308rem my main moose/bear gun. I take it deer hunting as well but havnt gone in a few years.

Have a nice Tikka .300winmag but it's back up now since I bought the .308

Been rocking the Win 88/308 since 2005.
I launch a 200gr cast boolit with gas check and imr 3031 with it. Moose and deer with that load.
308 is a favourite ctg of mine that I also shoot a heavy barrel savage axis I rebarreled. Dang accurate!!

I think the 308 is one of the best balanced cartridges. Good compromise of speed and frontal area. I think it is head and shoulders above a 6.5CM/swede, at least up to about 350m. Useless cartridge for dog tracking training. I have five 308's and two 6.5CM. Used a 6.5 CM for the last two seasons, about 40 deer later I think deer do run further with same shot placement. Deer will run with H/L 308 but just not as far. I use 168 A-max in the 308 since over 10 years, 178 ELDX is supposed to be the new go to in 308 which can extend range a bit.
Sika Stag I shot last season off-hand at 60yds with the 308, my son had the 6.5CM. The 5-25x56 Schmidt PMII with Grid2 reticle might not be the best choice but worked.

I have a M700 PSS thats chambered in .308win that i take along as a backup rifle at times.
I have harvested a whitetail buck with it, a few does.. and a few coyotes.(Whitetail hunt turned into a coyote hunt;)
It works beautifully, roll my own with GMX. I do love it.
Interested in beginning LRPS soon.
Stay safe

I have owned several rifles chambered in 308 Winchester over the years.

First was a M88 Winchester I bought in 1964.Shot a fair bit of game with it,
but sold it in favor of a beautiful M700 Carbine in 30-06.
The 308 is a very capable round, that will do practically everything asked
of it.

Nevertheless, I have never been able to warm up to the 308. This has not
a thing to do with it's capabilities, only a personal thing. I guess all the early
years with the '06 biased me. :)

I am quite certain that a game animal will never know which it was shot with,
so my personal choice is a moot point. Dave.

Not my favourite cartridge but I like the family, my Wife's rifle is a Tikka in 7 08 and I have a BLR in 358, I did get a nice 3x4 mule deer buck a few years ago with a Ruger compact in 308.
