Who here hunts with a Ruger #1?

I am thinking long and hard about getting one of these. Do any of you actually use one as your dedicated huntin arm??

...........I was with my father in law on our last successful moose hunt up in Fort Mac 4 years ago and he made short work of a moose on the run with his and the single shot action didn't handicap him one bit.
 
Just to expand a little on the question: does anyone out there hunt with an H&R or NEF single shot either? I was thinking about getting one for the wife to use as her first hunting rifle. Easy to "make safe".
 
I had one in 416 Rem, was a nice rifle. Killed a moose, a deer, and a coyote with it :D Someday Ill get a No1-A in 7x57

I like the Rugers , but actually prefer the brownings, with their open hammers.

Hunted Ruger No 1's and NEF handi rifles. You have to be very sure of your first shot. Most game won't give you enough time to reload and shoot again. I still say the NEF is more gun for the money than the Ruger. I am NOT saying the NEF is better just better value for 250.00 bucks.

My first dedicated big game rifle was a Ruger #1 in 7mm Remington Magnum. It was an awesome rig for mule deer when the shots can be planned on a stalk. It was OK for white tail from a stand, but as stated previously you have to be sure of your first shot. The second one does take a fairly long time to get off compared to a bolt action. It does certainly focus the mind on the shot at hand.

Open hammer thing and break action would be enough for me!:D
I hunted , trapped and guided for quite a few years with a H&R 158 break action in 30/30.
Never felt under gunned , even in "tight" stituations.:cool:

Ruger #1

Sure,

Lots of hunters happily set out with one form of muzzle loader or another. With a shell holder on your stock you gotta be faster with a follow-up shot if required than those fellas. My Ruger #1 is a .45-70 which is one of several good brush-buster calibers a Ruger #1 is safe for specialised hand loads.
 
I do, they are about my favorite rifles. I have lost count of how many I have had through the years. I have four of them right now. The little brother Ruger #3 has to count too. All sorts of calibers from .22 Hornet through .50/140 and .50/460Wby. They are very versitile and just great for the big bore experimentor. They started a single shot fettish which has filled my gun room with one shooters modern and antique.

I do.... You seem to know exactly what you need to know: ie One shot's enough... and anyone that needs an immediate second shot needs not a second shot, but more practice.
#1's are chambered in more cartridges than probably anything else. You will not be disappointed with one of Rugers' flagship rifles.

................Rob, i completely forgot. I have pics of your buffalo hunt here somewhere and that was with a Ruger #1 wasn't it??
 
A quick count Ruger #1s @ 5 All of them are hunting rifles! From 22/250 to 50 AK. With the 405win. being my favourite.
Follow up shots are just as quick as any bolt action that I've owned.
 
Yes Mark, I took my bison with a Ruger #1 in .50/140. One shot through him and he never took another step, the range was 98 yards on one end of him 100 yards on the other according to my range finder. The bullet was a 570 grain Barnes XLC at 2335fps. Note the one empty loop in the cartridge holder on the stock. The rear sight is a NECG apreture that fits the standard ruger scope dovetail.
