Who hunts for horns and who hunts for meat?

I hold out for a nice deer only to extend my time in the field. at the end of the season the tag always gets filled, whether its on a nice buck or a fat dry doe.

elk and moose are a different story. first legal animal gets it. every time.

Mostly, I just enjoy being out. LOVE spot and stalk. Enjoy every facet of hunting, from planning to prep to eating. Already started doing homework for this coming spring (son)turkey/(me)bear hunt as well as starting to plan our next fall/winter hunts.

That being said, meat.

To qualify, I do have a set of horns for every species I hunt on the wall, but while doing so passed up animals most horn hunters would drool over choosing instead a prime animal with nice, symmetrical horns for the wall. (Some of the racks you horn guys seem to covet are just damn ugly IMO, haha.)

I generally hunt to fill the freezer.l tend to take a small buck or dry doe as l find them better eating. l spend alot of time in the field scouting, following scrape lines etc,and just plain enjoying the outdoors For me its meat as for big racks l just follow the main trails and pick up sheds.

Deer camp is just a long standing tradition for a bunch of guys who look forward to geting together annually.

Having said that, camp rules are "bucks only", but we are not "trophy" driven, nor purely meat hunters.
Some oohs and aahs over a really nice one that occassionally gets taken, but a prime "forky" is just as important.
Half a deer per man we consider a good week.

Sometimes for meat.
Sometimes for trophies.
Sometimes for both at the same time.
Sometimes for neither.
Sometimes to use the guns and skills that I've aquired. The skills were aquired for hunting, so there's a bit of a "chicken and the egg" thing going on there.
Sometimes its about spending time with friends and family.
Sometimes its about being alone.
Sometimes its about a challenge, and at other times its about useing skills to make the challengeing easy.

In the end I hunt to have hunted, and for the experience and the memories. I hunt because I'm a hunter.

Well until game animals can produce proper bacon I will continue to say I trophy hunt!!;)

When I hunt, isn't much anymore I am out there to try to get the smartest , biggest , most dominant animal. Most of the time they are the winners.

When I do harvest game the meat is never wasted either.

Meat. If it has a nice rack on it... bonus. I'll shoot the first one I see. I havent found a recipe yet that can flavour " stories " of those I let by and regret later. LOL

I missed a NICE buck this year first time out. Later that day next deer I see was smaller 8 pointer. Down it went. My buddy went back to the exact spot I missed the big one days later. He got it. Sum of a biatch gave me a picture of it to brag too. :( I'll scan and post here. Beatifull rack. :)

A nice big Buck is great to brag about, but a prime critter is my biggest reward. 'Just bbq'd some recent venison tonight and spouse says; 'This doesn't taste gamey'. That is because of the preparation (home butchered).
Don't worry, I'll be out in the morn', I found some deep tracks from Mr. Buck and I am pumped.
That is the real and fun of it all.
