The nice thing about the 250AI is that it does work better in a short action than the 257Roberts and gives the about the same velocity.
I'm betting that he (and you) will like the 25s a lot and will stick with them. It's perfect for deer.
McMillan is now making stocks from the Remington Model 7 KS (Old Rem Custom Shop mold). I'm getting one in Edge.

Never had any 25's going to build two at the opposite ends of the spectrum. Building a 257 STW for myself Rem 700 in a Boyds Prairie hunter stock. Will be fun.

Not in the real world, maybe 200fps with 100g bullets from what I can tell. Biggest problem I have found no pressure tested data with barrel lengths to do a real comparison. I will only be building a 26" bbl I think, good for fireballs and muzzle blast not so good for getting the most out of it, but thats fine.
Same with the .250 Savage vs. .250 AI
The former is loaded to 45,000 CUP and the latter....well who knows? IIRC the .22-250 is loaded to 65,000psi, which should be somewhere around +55,000 CUP. The .257 Roberts +P is loaded to +5000 CUP higher than the regular version, and just take a look at the improved performance.

Well, in MY vast experience I've found just the opposite, nothing against the 250 Savage as I have had several nice ones.
My current Roberts is a tackdriver with any bullet weight tried thus far.

They did in the Custom Shop version. Unfortunately they were something like $2500, which sure doesn't make any sense to me. I'd rather have someone like Dennis or Bill put one together.
Savage does chamber it though, so there is a factory option for those who want a bolt action .250 Savage at an entry level price.

The .250-3000 in a model 99 is a great deer combination and it sounds like the original poster has already found a good load. I have used my 99A to take a whole bunch of caribou (87 & 100grain Winchester factory shells), several black bears (100 grain Noslers), and a few whitetails. I was surprised at how good the 87 grain loads worked but when reloading I always used 100s. Just last fall I loaned the rifle to a new hunter and he took his first whitetail with it and old Winchester 100 grain silvertips.
At about 2800 fps, the 100 grain loads perform well, offer a decent trajectory, and are easy on the rifle, shooter and brass. Both my wife and oldest daughter have shot this rifle / load with no complaints even though it has a metal butt plate. Let us know how you make out.
