Who hunts with a peep?

Does anyone know where I can pick up a Williams Peep for my Marlin? Do any of our sponsors carry them or is there a dealer in Ont?

Try Ellwood Epps - they have lots of peeps and they ship.

I picked up an SKS to use on deer when I didn't have the funds for anything else. I was concerned that I might miss a shot at the end of legal light with the stock sights so I started looking in to scope mounts. I figured by the time I did it properly (drilled the receiver), got a mount and a scope it wasn't worth the money. So I got a williams firesight peep and it is amazing. Works great in low light and now it's a great back/up, brush gun for use here in Ontario.

If I wasn't on such a tight budget at the time who knows when I would have discovered how fast and accurate a peep can be.

Like the above poster said, Epps or Williams in Port Perry, if Williams doesn't have it, they'll get it for you, good guys!

Hmmm - I've shot with peeps for years... I sight my rifles in with the orificed sight insert, then remove it for hunting - aka ghost ring. I've reviewed my stats - hits vs misses - peeps vs scope/red dot - and the peep shows a substantial advantage. For the tight bush here in Central Ontario, its hard to beat iron sights....
Regrettably, many new shooters never experience iron sights, as most new rifles dont come equipped with such hardware.

Many here have noted that they use Ghost Rings instead of apreture sites. That is the same configuration I use. Just take out the apreture insert and you have a ghost ring. Great for thick country, short range work.

As for overall accuracy, peeps can definitely be on par with scopes. The following are at 100 yards from the bench.

9.3x57 sight in the first year I hunted with it. Better than average group, but wow eh?

My 308 Savage scout this afternoon. Better than average but shows the potential

This is only a 50 yard target I was using an XS Sights tall Weaver ghost ring backup sight mounted onto the rear Leupold QRW scope base on my 21" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM loads are 350gr Barnes TSX @ 2450fps.

The bottom hole was from sighting in the ghost ring sight the group is three shots.

I can't see regular open sights anymore -but by installing a rear ghost ring[or removing the target aperture]and installing fiber optic front sights-I can shoot with them again .

I bought another Husky 9,3x57 strictly because it had a Norma peepsight, simple, rugged and it works.I bought a williams firesight set for my SKS-for the same reason-I can't shoot with open sights anymore

I suggest this combination for anybody who can't focus on regular sights anymore before you sell your old iron sighted rifles, or scope them.Besides, they carry better than scopes rifles and for under 100 yard hunting shots work just fine-maybe even better than a scope

I use Lymans on my Puma M92 .357 and Marlin 1894 .45-70 with aperture screwed in for targets and out for hunting.
I agreee with Boomers comments about flat top front blade, I have the XS sight set on a Marlin 39 mountie .22 and it is about perfect for that rifle.
I use the original peep sight on an old Belgian Browning T-bolt .22 and can shoot very well with the stock front sight if I dab a bit of flourescent yellow model paint on it.
I have two Sako Foresters with the original Sako dual range peep sights, but use them as spares if the scope ever needs to come off.
I have peeps on both my muzzle loaders.
Yup I like 'em!

Nothing beats the "peep" for fast acquisition on close up targets. I use one on my Marlin 30-30 when I hunt the tight stuff. When I hunt more in the open, I use the .270 with a 3x9.

You can call Williams direct and they'll ship it right to you. No problems apparently with US export regs. I've got Williams FPs on most of my levers (GG, 336, 39A...my 39TDS :D doesn't have one yet).

I think the receiver sight with aperature removed is the fastest sight going for the woods. Years ago everyone unscrewed that small aperature and looked through the big threaded hole for woods hunting. Way better in low light and just as accurate for hunting, nobody called it a ghost ring then though.

I haven't hunted with iron sights yet, but a buddy and I are planning a retro day for this coming season and I will be carrying my Garand for that, so the aperture sights will hopefully get a workout that day. Inside 150yds or so I find no real difference between aperture sights and a low power scope.

I have aperture sights on one rifle, a Winchester Legendary Frontiersman in 38-55. Williams Firesight up front, aperture screwed in for target, out for hunting. I have shot numerous 1 - 1¼" groups at 100 with this combo. Last fall I took it Whitetail hunting, and smacked two, a buck and a doe with it. Worked just great! [FWIW, my eyes are 65 years old.] Regards, Eagleye.
