Who is selling decent new SKS rifles?

Lever

I went today and Picked up the SKS for 149, I think its Great, Ive never shot it yet so I dont know how accurate this one is, but for the Price I am Very Happy, I know have tons of friends that are going to Get one, they sure are greased up lol

welcome to da club

glad you are happy. now spend time removing the cosmoline thoroughly, especially the firing pin area to avoid slamfire. there is an interesting video on how to clean in the sticky sks basic, i watched it several times, also read about the firing pin to avoid putting in upside down.

Holy crap!! and here I was sitting in my nice little world of chrome-bore-for-corrosive-ammo thinking :) My dinky little chicom with a chrome bore now seems less primitive

The only reason there is no chrome in the YUGOs is because there are no chrome mines in Yugosalvia.

You get a chance to shoot it yet Bmwhockey? Saw these at lever and pretty curious about 'em myself.

i bot two from lever and shot them a few weeks ago for the first time and both the rifle worked fine, not bad for a $149 rifle, the only thing is , once in awhile a casing would eject straight up and hit the ceiling. we also used the cheap czech ammo so i would say we had fun and didnt blow a bunch of money.

Yeah, I was down at Levers awhile ago and noticed that they are again selling the real SKS with the 20.5" barrel at good prices. They have both pinned and or threaded configs. They have stocks with 1"rubber butt extender or steel trap door kinds. So know what you want and what it looks like. Learn what not to buy first!!!! And that can be done on the other threads Personnally, I would get the threaded barrel version, as I have seen and owned a pinned that wasn't put together right to start with. And I can avoid that problem by close inspection now( ...one sh##y rifle later! PS they took it back) But I don't think there is an issue with pinned barrels versus threaded shooting the barrels off. It is a headspace problem that increases the amount of failure to go bang. Caveat emptor

^Sound advice, I agree 100%. I also prefer the threaded barrel models, but that's just my personal preference, pinned barrel models function exactly the same. Glad to hear that Lever isn't selling junk anymore :D

If anyone can manage to wear out an SKS barrel, do a cutaway and post pics, cuz I wanna see!! Chrome lining + low velocity intermediate cartridge = barrels that don't wear out

Please Help Me Out Here

I really like this thread.

Impulse buy tomorrow.

I'm intrigued with the SKS and the price.

So, do I phone Marstar or do I phone Lever?

Would I, new to rifles, and just a plinker and maybe a small game or deer guy once in a while, notice the difference?

Your call.

Thanks for any help.

Oh, one more thing. I really don't have the space or patience right now to deal with cosmo. I know this will sound weird, but if both Marstar and Lever ships in cosmo, do I have any other alternative?

Pullens in Victoria has some on the rack...not in cosmo' of course.

Even then cosmo' has this magic ability to find it's way out of a rifle no matter how much you clean it...keep rags with you at the range to wipe your hands, and the stock as it heats up.

hey!! i can get my 16 yo son to clean it for you for a fee, haha. he cleaned both of mine.

Can he get to the Toronto area? It's just that it's getting cold here, I don't really want to breathe in solvent, and if I'm spending less than 2 bills for a firearm, do I want to spend another $50 for a steam cleaner?

Any brilliant short cut cleaning ideas? It'll have to be in the garage this time of year. Hey, we haven't even established if Marstar ships em in cosmo. Probably, I guess.

Maybe I should buy the Marstar and worry about cleaning it some other time.

.

Put the whole thing in the dishwasher on the pot cycle. Re-oil, then refinish the stock with tung oil and Bob's your uncle.

I hope Bob's working at appliance center. Of course some people might like the taste of cosmoline on their cutlery, but some (especialy wives).. let me tell ya...

i cleaned my 2 sks with solvent, after cleaning for a few hours, i was getting light headed, haha.

altho i have hever tried this, turn up the temperture in your hot water tank to max and run the water thru the pieces in the laundry tub, will it melt the cosmo?

Steam Cleaning

The Internet holds several articles about removing cosmo. It's put on auto parts, so we could use those products.

The neatest method I've seen so far is based on the melting point of Cosmoline--140-160F.

So, a cheap steam cleaner (Canadian Tire has one) could melt the stuff right from the gun. I would just keep a tub to catch the goo under the part. I could hold most parts with kitchen bacon tongs. A vise grip with a rag could hold the other parts. I would guess that the steam would cool down in the barrel, so mineral spirits might have to be used for that.

Gotta go now. Calling Marstar. Theirs is shipped with an oil thinner than cosmo, so it'll be brake cleaner for me.

Consider me a pending SKS owner.

If I had to clean up an SKS all over again, I'd invest in a tabletop parts washer from Princess Auto or Harbor Freight;

The solvent can be purchased from princess auto or cambodian tire, as well. The stuff that princess auto sells isn't quite as harsh as turpentine or varsol, so it won't burn your sensitive manicured hands :D
