Who is Using a 28 Gauge, This 2025-26 Hunting Season and Now 2026-27 Season

Ive got several 28 gauges that I absolutely love. A few Browning O/U, a few Win Mod 12, a Rem 1100 and and Rem 870, a Win Mod 23, a Benelli Sporting and a little sweetheart Ithaca M37 recently acquired from a generous and understanding gentleman on CGN…who was sympathetic to my needs and addictions in 28g shotguns having beautiful wood.

All these 28g shotguns are a little bit different…in the way they mount, swing and bust clays and drop birds. The Ithaca 37 is in a league of its own. It can maneuver with the best of birds. I bought an assortment of Brilley extended chokes for it. Protects the thin muzzle, easy in and outs without a choke wrench and options for close in birds to way out there. Not to be underestimated, some of my 28g think they are 12g but in a ‘lively’ little package that is a joy carry.
Yes the Ithaca Model 37 28 gauge are nice guns.I have one,but have used it little of late years.:)

Well done.:) What were you using for a 28 gauge gun and ammunition,Bustercluck?
Huglu sxs. I’m trying out #5 in my primary and#8 in my secondary. I’m only shooting #8 because the ammo was really cheap, otherwise I’ll probably switch to someyhing else. I did put one down at about 35 yards or better last night with the 5s.

I’m still getting used to the double triggers and I might switch that around. I just shot another one that laid up directly overhead at about ten yards and got em with the secondary so I’ll try it out some more before I make a decision.

No idea. This is my first year hunting 28 and I’m fairly new to upland altogether. This is my first dedicated dog and he’s four. I was shooting a 410 pump last year. Pheasants are a 4-5 hour drive for me so we only get down here once or twice per year. My dog likes crashing bush for ruffies and he’s just picking up how to scent the wind and work the grass this trip. I’ve seen him pick up scent in the grass and he usually get’s confused, but today he worked a zigzag pattern into the wind and I could see the centre of his pattern was where the scent was everytime. Normally he scent chases ruffies like a hound.

Have a couple of boxes of Fiocchi Golden Pheasant 28 gauge 7/8 ounce 2 3/4 inch, but have not used them myself.I understand that Fiocchi now has a 3 inch version of this load.

I have a Cooey 840 28ga with 28" FC barrel in ice shape . It is not fancy but kills pheasants just fine so far out to 40yards or so. Handload all my ammo.

I use a 28ga for a lot of hunting and enjoy loading my own shells for it.
I have 3 loads that I like to use.
1. General small game and upland game, I load a 3/4oz lead either in #6 or 7.5 shot at around 1250fps.
2. my heavy game load when I expect longer shots like late season pheasants, 7/8 oz lead load in #5 or 6 shot at around 1275 fps.
3. Non tox duck load, 3/4oz of bismuth #5 shot at 1275fps, works great at normal shooting distance.
I have shot a lot of game with the 28ga and these loads over the years and really have no need to use anything else unless I plane just feel like changing to something else for the fun of it.
