Who is Using a 28 Gauge, This 2025-26 Hunting Season

Bah humbug!!!

Just bought a 410 as I didn’t have one. Already have a 28 gauge in a Browning BPS. Intended for skeet.

But because of you buggers, now I hafta get a 28 in an over/under for skeet.

But not gonna tell you people that.

All of them. 2x28 savage model 220 hammerless from 1939-40. One model 220a from 1954+. One Stevens 94c late 50s. One Cooey 84 pre Winchester crapola! The oldest 220 28 gauge is deadly on anything from Huns up to pheasant with Winchester one ounce 7.5s and 6s if I do my job. All of them I have restored/upgraded except the Stevens. Some of those old single shots have very nice wood if you treat it nicely.

That's great, that they are all 28 gauge guns.In the past I had a near mint Savage Model 220 28 gauge.Beautiful little gun.One of the ones I should of kept.:( I too have had good results with the 1 ounce Winchester loads.

Nice collection.Did it take you long to put it together?

Over about eight years. My second Utica 220 I got recently. I have many more in 20 gauge, 16 and one 12 guage and .410. I also shoot an AYA no. 4 and a not common B. Rizzini round action with double triggers and 29 inch barrels.

HA HA yes, I know how this works. It's tempting to buy everything and everyone here is an enabler!

I keep in mind this advice from a friend: "There are only wrong choices." No matter what you buy, you'll likely find a need/desire for something just slightly different. Or it doesn't do what you hoped it would. Or you don't use it as much as you should. Or ... anyways, you get the point.

I'm being overly patient and careful with my purchases, and if I'm a good boy I'll be able to get myself a small bore shotgun for my birthday.

Is your AYA #4 a 28 gauge?I have a Model 3A AYA in 28 gauge.

Sounds like you're finally getting into the rabbits, 28 Gauge!
I had a good season with the 28. As usual, I used my CZ partridge SxS for everything. The waterfowl season out here was a bust with the continuing drought, so I focused on upland... even got my ill-trained lab cross out a few times and she did pretty well. Got lots of Ruffed Grouse, went to a pheasant release site several times with decent success, and finished off the season with my traditional chukar hunt in southern BC.
No additions to the stable... I did sell my Ruger Red Label 28 gauge a while back .. just wasn't using it and I needed some cash.

Hello BGB.Good to hear from you .Missed you on the 28 Gauge Society site.

I used to be 28 gauge on this site,but I needed to update.The site had my old e mail address and sent the code there to update with.That e mail is long gone,so I was not able to update .In order to get back on this site ,I had to start a new account,hence the 28 gauge 2 name.:)

Good to hear that you had a good season ,outside the ducks and that the old 28 gauge CZ Partridge is still working well for you.Was able to bag 3 partridge(ruffed grouse) so not a great year,but better than most recent ones, when I bagged 0. :)

Rabbits(snowshoe hare) seem very spotty .Been very lucky to get what I have bagged.Lots of walking.:)

How did your yearly chukar hunt go?

Waterfowl season is open here until January 22 nd,but I doubt I will be able to get out again.


Been thinking of getting a new 3 inch 28 gauge to use for waterfowl.Have not used the 28 gauge on waterfowl ,since lead became illegal .Been looking at the 3 inch 28 gauge Weatherby Orion.For some reason I have taken a shine to the gun.Only problem is, it is a two shot gun and I prefer a 3 shot gun ,for waterfowl hunting.

Would like a 28 gauge 3 inch self loading gun.However,the only 28 gauge 3 inch self loading guns that I know of are the Beretta and Benelli guns.Not right fond of either.Of the two, I guess I would favour the Benelli over the Beretta.:)Just me, nothing really wrong with either gun.:)

Have not been able to get out this week,even for short evening 28 gauge hunt.Hope to get a 28 gauge out tomorrow evening, for a short hunt.:)
