Who is Using a 28 Gauge, This 2025-26 Hunting Season

Good day
New here.
I will be using my new 28 guage for grouse and rabbit. Just bought a Federal . So far I like it but the trigger reach is too long for me so I may already be due for an upgrade. lol
Mike
Just what is a Federal 28 gauge gun?I have heard of Federal ammunition, but not a 28 gauge Federal gun.

I sold the 870, it had extraction problems. There was a little burr on the left side just behind the rim of the casing that was catching the left edge of the rim. After that it worked great but by now I was a little sour on the gun so it went bye bye.
This guy helped me fix the problem.
So you at present time are a one 28 gauge gun man?:)Not many of them around.LOL You must have a lot of will power to stay with only one 28 gauge.:)

Out this afternoon ,for about two hours with the 28 gauge AYA.Unable to bag anything, but did see one rabbit just before I got back to the truck. No shot though:( Also saw one partridge(ruffed grouse) while traveling to the hunting spot.Partridge season is now closed here.

O well, at least I was able to get out,get some exercise and carry a 28 gauge afield.:)

Sounds like you put your 28 gauge to quite a bit of use.How long have you been in the 28 gauge camp?

When you travel to hunt in the U.S. ,are you able to take ammo with you or do you have to buy the ammo when you get there?
Shooting a 28ga for maybe 5 years now. You can list ammo on your form 6 along with firearms for temporary import to the USA.

You can usually buy more ammo down there if you need it as well!

That's nice to know about the ammo.Is it the same,do you know, for those coming from the U.S. here?

How did you get interested in the 28 gauge?

No idea what Americans need to come to Canada with firearms and ammo.

I started carrying a 28Ga primarily from a weight savings perspective. Out here on the prairies, it's pretty common to walk 6-10 miles in the morning and then again the same in the afternoon chasing a brace of pointers. The ounces really add up!
The 28ga frame is also alot nicer for horseback scabbards too when we are training dogs for field trials too.

Wow a 6 to 10 mile walk in the morning and another 6 to 10 mile walk in the afternoon. Now that is some kind of a walk.:)

Yes, the light weight 28 gauge guns are a joy to carry in the field.:)

The 28 gauge is often overlooked as just a fun little clay buster! In the hands of a skilled operator it’s more than a match for any fowl. These beauts were harvested this week by a buddy of mine on the St Clair with a Benelli 28 with 3” Boss 5s.View attachment 1072119View attachment 1072120
Wow, a canvasback and a redhead. That is quite the haul.Well done to your buddy.I have been thinking about getting a 3 inch self loader 28 gauge to try on waterfowl.Have not used a 28 gauge on waterfowl, since lead was banned.

Longstud where or how were you able to get your hands on the Boss shells? Was trying to source those myself here in Canada but no luck when I tried.
Good question.Did not think that Boss shells were available in Canada.

I have been looking for some 3 inch Winchester 28 gauge nickel plated Bismuth, but have found none.

My buddy is a guide with the outfitter I guided with. Most of the customers are American and they bring them up with them and thats how he was able to shoot them. The Bismuth they were loading is done as China has stopped playing with CHEESIE so NO SOUP(Bismuth) FOR YOU!! They (BOSS) will be loading some kind of all copper pellet for next years offerings. Apparently very similar results as lead in the testing.

I shot a bunch two years ago and they are very nice shells. I used tungsten this year as well as some old HEVIMETAL I still had from years ago. The tungsten out of my 20 is the jam but a little stiff on the wallet at $75 plus tax a box. I cant seem to find it and was informed its no longer available either. Might have to start melting silver and maiking my own,WAIT silvers over $100 an ounce HAHA
