Who is Using a 28 Gauge, This 2025-26 Hunting Season

Rabbits have been down here for a number of years now.At some point they will rebound. What I call rabbits ,are really snowshoe hare. They do go in a cycle.
Ahh those kind of bunnies. No thanks, cottontails I am all in. Snowshoes? No thanks, wouldn't waste a good 28ga shell on one when 25 cents worth of snare wire is all they are worth. They don't taste good enough to bother with unless a person is starving. :ROFLMAO:

…and I bought them all, but just need ‘one more’…famous last words. lol
The Browning/Win 12’s are a well built excellent handling game gun. Most memorable mallard shoot for me and my son was with the above Mod 12’s with 28g Kent bismuth shells…

The Rizzinis are a class act too!! Have 3, no regrets….The 20g is versatile, the 28g is sweeet and the 410 with 32” barrels is a freak.
In the past ,when lead was legal ,I did use the 28 gauge a bit on waterfowl.Since lead was outlawed, I have not used the 28 gauge for that purpose.

That's part of the re4ason I would like to get a 28 gauge self loader in 3 inch to try it on waterfowl.

That must of been quite a hunt, using those 28 gauge Model 12 Brownings on waterfowl.I believe the 28 gauge Kent Bismuth are 2 3/4 inch number 6.Am I right on that?

I guess its all in you taste buds.:)No cotton tails around here,so I have no idea what they taste like.:)The one I got, I took to an elderly lady I know ,who loves all kinds of wild meat. She grew up on it and is now 93 years old.I do not think she would of been happier ,if I gave her $500.00 .:)I always take the first rabbit I get to her.:)

Without walking to my storage area Im guessing they are #4. We bought out the entire inventory when the store dropped the price from $25 per box of 25 shells to $11 per box. I reload bismuth also purchased from Bilizor in Alberta. About $170 for a small bag. Note…we shot these mallards over decoys on a small pond and even at 30 yards they were being stoned with authority.

Wow $11.00 a box for 28 gauge Bismuth. Now that is a good deal.:)Wish I could find a deal like that.:)

Just looking on line and all I could find in Kent Bismuth 28 gauge was number 6 and that was in the U.S.ofA.:)

Just so happens we bought the Kents in the USA…New York State. Went through checkout with a pile thinking the price was $17.00 so when we were told the NEW price was reduced to $11.00 I took the first shopping cart out to the truck and my son spun around and went back and cleaned them out completely !!!! No grief crossing the border back in Canada, things were a little bit different back then.

Yes you are right ,things were much different when it came to dealing with the U.S.of A. back then.

Just how much of your ill gotten gain did you get away with any way?LOL Sounds like a lot.:)

Well out this evening for another short 28 gauge hunt.Never saw a thing.:( O well, there is always another day.:)Had the old 28 gauge Model 370 Winchester with me today. :)

Kent .28 2 3/4 is #6, and 3" is both #5 & 6, currently.

I use an 1100 Sporting, Ruger Red Label, and Browning M12.
Thanks for that information on the 3 inch 28 gauge Kent Bismuth.Do not believe I was aware of the 3 inch version.I remember back in the day ,1 1/4 ounce of lead was my duck load in the old blue 2 3/4 inch C-I-L Imperial shell. The 1 1/16 ounce of 28 gauge Bismuth should made a pretty fair duck load.

You have a nice group of 28 gauge guns there. What do you use them for?Do you have a favourite of the group?

I use my 28 gauge M37 Ithaca early season. But once the snow flies and stays, it gets put away and my circa 1971 20 gauge M37 takes its place for upland.
Just wondering why you fell you need the 20 gauge over the 28 gauge when the snow stays?A one ounce 28 gauge load is a pretty good load.:)

Do not think you can go wrong using an Ithaca Model 37,28 or 20 gauge,:)

Hey, I forgot to mention that I also have a new production Ithaca M37.

They all quite nice, the Ithaca is a dream gun, very well made, interesting piece of kit.

The Rugers are rare, and I tend to use them the most, also likely the most valuable as of today.

I have a pigeon problem on the farm, so they get used for that, some Ruffed Grouse and rabbit.

I sold my .410 collection, still have a couple interchangeable barrels in that though.

With the 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 added to the group ,you for sure have a really nice group of guns.:)What are you using for chokes in your 28 gauge Ruger?

Skeet and IC for pigeons/grouse, and IC and Mod for rabbits.
Sounds like good choices. The partridge (ruffed grouse),pigeons in your area must stay close ,for the skeet and improved cylinder use?I did in the past ,use a skeet choked Remington Model 11-48 on partridge and it did work well. However ,I prefer a modified choke for all around use in the 28 gauge.I found the one ounce load worked really well in the more open chokes.Helped to fill out the pattern and give you a bit more shooting "room".:)

No there not cheap the Merkle, but can't seem to find a nice SXS with the receiver finish I want(no stainless receivers) and I don't need choke tubes, just nice fixed tight choked gun for pot shooting birds in tight old forest trails!
I have a Merkle cape gun and I know the quality you get from Merkle, not fancy, but built high tolerances, a working man's gun, not showroom gun😉.
Seems no one will let go of there higher quality AYA here in Canada, would consider something like that?
28 gauge 2 do you have any recommendation on a traditional quality SXS in today's market?
RFM out of Italy. Project upland has a 3d visualization gun builder. I dont own one but I've handled a few. Well built nicely finished. They did just take a price hike recently but for a semi custom made gun I think they're still a great deal and much cheaper than a Spanish best now

Does Ithaca still make shotguns?
That is a good question.Their web site is still up.It lists the 28 gauge Model 37 as out of stock. It does list the Model 37 as in stock ,but with a price of over $2700 U.S. dollars.Whether these are custom guns, new stock or old stock I do not know.I know that Ithaca has been having troubles of late years. The guns of late years were made in Ohio.
