So Blacksmithden, my wife, and Den's friend Troy were out at Genessee today mucking around with our shotguns, and after a box or so of mixed factory ammo (some winchester and federal target loads, some 00 reduced recoil, and some Rem Sluggers) I noticed something awry with my shotgun.

Take a look, tell me how this happened, and make a suggestion as to what kind of replacement stock I should get. Note that my shotgun has a matching fore end, though I'd prefer a police length fore end.

So much for refinishing that wood and making it look perty... it's kindling now!

Looks like your missing the metal plate that goes between the stock and receiver. I think this keeps the stock from butting (get it) up against the receiver causing the wood to split.Every 870 I have had (ok only three) have the metal plate in place with a wood stock.GHad a few beer .neighbor ladies in the bath and I'm listening to Carlie Majors do I win a prize.

Why is that idiot on gunnutz instead of the bath? Ya I like to talk to myself, it makes life easier when you have someone to talk too

Ditto in the bearing plate. It looks like a badly fitting stock, and maybe on to tight as well.

:agree: BINGO!!!

Bummer bro. Is that a new shotgun since it seems like a defective stock.
My wife bought it for me for Xmas year before last. Second hand, but I bought her a second hand CZ75B. :p

I'd be looking in the EE for new wood rather than putting plastic on it. What caused it? Loose stock bolt? Or just poor grain?
Your guess was as good as mine. But read on for more comments. But once I get the forend off, make me an offer. I can even stain it walnut or cabernet for you, and tru-oil it for a price.

Metal plate? I was unaware they were supposed to have a metal plate. This is the first I've heard of it. In fact, when we had a few wood stocked 870s at Brinks when I worked there, I never recalled seeing a metal plate or spacer on those particular shotguns. Had I known about it, I probably would never have fired it.

My 870 Express doesn't appear to have any metal plate there, and it hasn't done that. So far.

If it does, I'll probably just get a Remington synthetic replacement, cause I'm not a tacticool kind of guy.
