Here's a question that I've been looking for an answer to.
Who out there makes a top quality 1911 out there!
I'm looking for some feedback to help me decide on my next .45 purchase from people who actually have used them.

Feel free to give me the pro's and con's on your recomendations.
Thanks,

I don't own a 1911, but if I were to buy one it would be a toss-up between the STI Trojan and the Kimber Custom II. I would probably go for the Kimber, since it is cheaper.

This came up before and a ####storm ensued

For a quality out of the box 1911, go for a STI or Kimber. I just traded my STI Trojan (single stack) but hope to buy an STI Tactical (double stack). They are very nice guns but you pay for it.

The Kimbers are a small step down in price but the quality is still superb. I have a Kimber stainless Target (single stack) and my only gripe is that compared to the STI, the thumb safety on the Kimber is just a tad sharper and digs a big into my thumb (not painfully, but I notice the safety being there).

Below that, you are looking at Springfields - the loaded models come with all the bells and whistles and are alot cheaper than the Kimbers and STIs. In terms of quality, some fit tight and some don't. Get a tight one and you will probably be happy and you will have a good deal in your hands. Get a loose one and, well, that's what you paid for.

Can't help you below that although some of the Norincos I have played with were a good deal for the money. However, if you plan on tricking it out, why not pay the money upfront ? ;-) :D

If I had the cash, and was going to pick up an Über 1911... I'd go STI.

Actually... not in 45 though. (I'd be too broke ) I'd get a STI 4.15 Tactical in 9mm. (Around $2400 comes in 9mm, 40 and 45acp)

Personally, I think that S&W 1911's offer the best bang for the buck. Great quality/relibaility and reasonable prices.

Lots of good info floating around on these - would really like to try one on for size... do they come in 40SW ?

The absolute cream of the crop are the Les Baer, Ed Brown and Wilson variants. That type of quality comes at a (very high) price though.

45 ACP is hard not to like.
That's why I've got one in the form of a Glock 21, Sig 220.. Love them, for what they are.
1911 'wise' ...Springfield TRP Operator, Kimber Tactical ProII, and just this week, a Colt Combat
Commander in stainless...
The choice in 1911 style pistols is only limited by what you want to spend.
Right now, the best 'bang for the buck' would have to be one of the Springfield 'loaded' models...
Pick the one that appeals.. finish, sights, barrel length, etc., and have at it!
As always, you don't know what you really like until you've had it in your hands and had a chance to put a few rounds down range... if it's not your 'cup of tea', trade or sell it, or like I tend to do, move on to one of the other choices..
That's how you establish your collection of 'keepers'! :D (Hmmm, next a Les Baer!) 8)

I agree! Take a look at Smith and Wesson. You can get one of these pistols with a lot of customization, out of the box, for less than $1400.

Actually they are priced the same as the others, and quality is hit and miss. I have had a half dozen come through the store. Two had VERY poorly finished muzzles, not at all what I expected from this company. Price wise they are pretty much the same as Kimber or SA models that have more features.

If I was a 'newbie' 1911 .45 shooter I'd get a 'tuned' Norc with a decent set of sites installed via 'Armco' and spend the difference between that and a brand new STI on reloading components. I'd then learn to shoot that 1911 .45 real well with all that ammo... but then that's just me.

Another vote for the S&W. I've been shooting one for over a year and it's an excellent pistol. If I thought a better pistol was available in the same price range I'd buy it. They get good reviews on this site as well.

While we are on the subject is anyone in Canada carrying the Dan Wesson line? I inspected a couple on a recent visit to the U.S. and was impressed with what I saw.
