Who now has an SKS magazine with a nice drain hole in it?

Can you folks send me a pictures of those broken mags . I have to present it at origin. It would be nice to have a solid proof in my hands.

Same happened to a friend of mine, those franken pins suck. I can't wait for mine to fall out so I ahve an excuse to pin it correctly.

While we're on the subject...

Does anyone know what the correct measurements are to drill the hole and install the rivet if you wanted to take a trip south and purchase 10 or 20 round mags and pin them yourself? Also, where might one go to get the right length rivets?

I'm heading south next month for 5 days, not sure if I'll bother, but there's a store that carries Tapco stuff near the airport I'm flying out of. Its not that far to drive, if its not too big a pain I might get a few more some other time.

Not sure about the legalities of bringing them in upinned. Maybe others can comment.

If this were to be done, you'd be better off attaching the pin on the follower rather than the mag. This was covered (with photos) in other postings. Just do a search.

Would hollowing out the pin decrease the chances of this reoccuring? I think thats what I'm going to try, then epoxying it back in place (I don't know how to weld).

you are supposed to weld a rod to the follower to do a proper job, I don't know how to weld with that fine of a material, so that would just leave brazing it, don't know if this would anneal it too much - probably would - I suppose if you were clever you could make a custom follower that would give you 5 rounds, that would be a good metalworking/fitting/fabricating project, but dooable I think but I chose just to order an aftermarket magazine from the states which will probably work out to a few bucks cheaper than buying it from a Canadian dealer.

Mine fell out within the first couple weeks. Took the gun apart and welded the franken pin back in with a mig. It happened at home but could have just as easily happened while out hunting. I would suggest getting some extra weld on the thing from the get go.

Why not just use a 1 1/2" bolt through the hole in the bottom of the mag? A washer and nut hold it securely and if you want it to be permanent, one could loctite or weld the nut in place.

I used an 1 1/2" bolt when the weld broke on my SKS and only had to file a few milimeters off the bolt to restrict it to 5 rounds with a little bit over to make loading easier.

What gets me is the magazines are not easy to work on really unless you are a good welder, there is nothing square about them, has anyone taken the follower out of theirs? - it seems there is a little collar on each side of the front end of the follower that keeps it attached to the pan, which is securely welded in front so it does not seem that easy to pry it out of there. the pans appear to be made of metal that's probably around .032" of course the metric equivalent, hardly enough support for a 3oz turdplug. for now an aftermarket magazine seems about the best fix imo.

Mods, Can we get this stickied for the benefit of all the prospective SKS buyers out there? Hey man it's not cost effective to get these guns seen by a gunsmith, and the aftermarket magazines are not cheap either. This is a problem that is not going to go away for a long time. ;)

Edit: and I think we can all handle the truth right? :D
