Who runs 308 in there norc m14?

So your Norinco with the 0.010" over sized chamber is no problem. Neither is a USGI M14. In fact you won't buy an off the shelf M14 type with a SAMMI minimum chamber. But if your chamber is cut to 1.630" you are taking your chances. That is unless you are Sure your rounds are under that.

well if you want to get pissy about it, lets hear from the very large number of cgn shooters. I cant speak to everyone, only myself and those I shoot with. I've fired 7.62surplus and 308 out of USGI M14's, Israeli (USGI?) M14's, norc m14's, FN C1, aussie L1, HK 91, Israeli 7.62 k98mausers. Never had a problem in any of the rounds I fired. I'm nowhere near an expert in anything and never claim to be.
How many rifles have you seen blow up from mixing 308/762, and not attributed to slamfires??
 
The danger is at the extreme ends of the headspace range between the two cartridges. YES, they are different.
For our purposes in a battle rifle chamber , you must understand the case expansion differences between the two.
Military 7.62 nato brass is thicker, has less internal volume and has a much lower expansion rate. It also does not "crush" well into thighter than nato chambers. BUT many an M14/M1A builder/shooter stateside will agree that a 1.632" headspace is an all around "match chamber"
Anyhooo, I aint wading into this one too deeply. I only shoot factory .308 federal powershok and some chicom .308 and all my rifles have 1.630" to 1.634"
Incidently, all the norinco .308/7.62 I'm mic'd , comes out around 1.628" before firing. That's 2thou under a .308 match chamber.

In long chambers getting over 1.640", I caution the use of .308 sammi spec loads/brass. Why? Case expansion for a sammi spec .308 case has it's limits and I personally feel that limit is pretty much 1.640" or 10thou over match .308 Go (1.630")
Read kuhnhaussen, read Glenn Zediker , take my advice for whatever it's worth. Just be safe and have fun.
 
Great results with Federal 150gr PowerShock and Winchester 150gr Power Point.

Reloads with H4895,winchester brass, winchester WLR primers. Factory loads of 180gr are to be avoided but I've loaded 180gr with a light charge of H4895. Never had an issue.
 
No issues with 150gr AE ball in mine before I tore it apart and did the CHOPMOD. Once I get it put back together (It's been going on 6 years now!) I'll let you know if it still goes bang of it goes kaboom. Only thing I see being an issue for me is not getting enough gas with the shorter barrel.
 
Yes it will work. BUT. If U have excessive head space it could may cause a safety problem with case head separation. Probably would not happen in worst case with only one firing but could occur with consecutive re-loadings.
 
Excessive headspace is a problem regardless of which is used. Moot point really.

Shooters have and will debate this very topic till the end of time... Or until plasma rifles become the norm and we'll have a pile of other stuff to debate endessly in circles LOL
 
The pressure of 308 and 7.62 is about the same, so that is not an issue.

With 308 you can get heavy bullets, loaded with slower powder, that will generate excessive port pressure.

I can't get very excited about the headspace issue. 20 or 20 thou of excess headspace does not mean much on the first firing. I have seen 308 ammo shot regularly in rifles with 500 thou of excess headspace. All it does is move the shoulder forward a half inch. (Some guys shoot 308 in their 3006).

Excess headspace can be cause by a too deep chamber. Not a big deal. Or, it can be caused by a too short bolt. A very big deal, because of the unsupported case head.

308 brass has a softer primer than military, so slam fires are a bigger risk.

Potato....potato... :) Mine eats it up! But I would keep it below the 170 grain tho, I have ran 180s and I think it may be a bit much. And primers in NATO rounds are harder then hunting rounds.
 
I have run, .308 and 7.62 and both have run excellent. No complaints with either one. If your chamber is on the larger side then if you are reloading keep an eye out for case head separation. But no matter what, shoot and enjoy!!

I like the .308/7.62 debate. it separates the posters into two groups, those who know what they are talking about , and those that are full of ####.:H:S:
