Who's going spring bear hunting in Ontario?

Heading out the end of April or first week of May depending on ice conditions - going by canoe so need that ice gone!! Taking my trusty 35 Whelen - it took 3 last fall (one for me and one for each of my two sons).

Damn fine Rifle!

I agree GMC403!!! Might I add, DAMN FINE CARTRIDGE!!! :ar15:

Cheers
Jay

35 Whelen is 2nd from the right... I hammered a spring bear with mine, LOVE it!

Might I add, DAMN FINE CARTRIDGE!!! .35 Whelen...

I had an M77 MKII Whelen for many years and it saw the field alot... but was Whelen"less" for quite a few years, but I recently picked up a No.1-A Whelen and I am looking forward to putting it to use on local bears and deer.

I will be out chasing spring bear in MB this year with archery gear. Will be my first bear hunt, and I'm super excited already

I'm getting all my gear ready for my first spring bear hunt. Have to be honest, I'm not a big fan of the black flies and mosquitoes but I am excited to get going. Hoping the weather will break soon, I'm planning to head up on the 17th to get set up, but there is still a bit of snow so that may get pushed back.

Anyone else getting the itch to get back out in the bush and start hunting again?

I'm thinking about it!
I'm an Ontario resident, but have a camp in Quebec that is full of the critters!

I have to pay non-res fees ($190 +/-), but it's good for both spring and fall seasons.

Good luck!

Booked my first bear hunt with a little lodge here in Ontario for 6 days - Its a fall hunt but I am so excited I can't stop making lists of things to bring. I'm thinking of shooting either a Tikka t3x .308 w/ 150gr Barnes Vor-tx, or a Ruger M77 .358 w/225gr Buffalo Bore which uses barnes TSX all copper as well. Any input? is the .308 enough or should I really hammer em with the .358?

Northwest of Sudbury... he will hunt too, but will climb with a buddy while I scout and spot... I have taken a number of bears in that area over the years...

Hoyt - have you done this type of hunting in this area in the fall as well ? i am very seriously considering going up that way for a fall hunt to spot and stalk or ambush type hunt. Never done it or bear hunted before. I was thinking of finding clear cuts and blueberry patches to focus on. I don't have the time or property to set up baits nor does it interest me tbh. any info you can provide is appreciated. PM is cool

Anyone know of any outfitters in Ont that do a property/stand rental?

I'd love to get out for it, but didnt have any time to do a bait area - and have a couple buddies also interested in going out for a weekend hunt.

I have taken many fall bears in that area and others and guided clients for many years to nice bruins. Berries are the key in the fall, your plan is solid but finding the right cuts is the key... call the forestry companies and request maps (pay for) showing 5-7 year old cuts... these are old enough for good berry crops, but not so old that visibility is impeded.

We'll be heading up to Parry Sound area middle of May. With that in mind, here are some things to ponder...

Spring bear hunt is also turkey season. My understanding is bear hunting is best first thing in the morning, and just before sunset. I want camo for turkey, but regulations say I must be in orange for bear unless I'm in a tree stand.

So, here are my thoughts: bait pile to one side, turkey decoys on the other side, full orange outfit inside a ground blind with my thermocell, 12 gauge with iron sights, slugs and #4 lead shot in my blind (slugs around sunrise/sunset, #4 lead during the day).

Pretty sure I can't have two guns with me in the blind (unless one is unloaded and in the case) so 12 gauge would appear best. Maybe need to change choke from IC to full when change from slugs to shot.

Crazy?

Just make sure if you are baiting for bear that it is not something that could be construed as turkey bait or a CO may ding you for hunting turkey too close to bait.
