Who's got .17rem fever

I shoot a 17REM CZ527 Varmint Kevlar very sparingly cause I will take it to my grave with me.
Pet load is BERGER 25gr @ 4200 fps ...using H4895 and REM brass
This is my walk about/calling ...coyote rifle
Longest kill was a large male coyote at 450 yards into the heart area which is amazing since there is only 200 lbs of bullet energy at that distance.
Most accurate shot was on a RED fox sunbathing during the winter season curled up on an open cultivated field 12 inches to the entrance of his burrow.
The distance was lazered at 300 yards ...the bullet got him behind the ear which dispatched him cleanly with no crawling into the burrow,

I like to try one, I had two .Remington .17 fireballs, that weren't overly great, and was looking for a .17 Remington,
A Sako L46 in Mack IV (fireball)
fell in my hands, very happy with that purchase, it will punch five shot, 100m penny sized groups, with 25gr v-max, or 20gr, at 3750 and 4000 fps, with 18.5 or 19 gr benchmark, shot quite a few gopher's rabbits, rats, wallaby's and hare's, with it now, and shot a Fallow deer yearling,
with a 25gr HP, cause that what i had in my hands, when the opportunity showed up.

hot rod .17 cals are very effective, on game to 50lbs or so.I never tried a 17rem, but I did have a Cooper in 17FB. My 25gr v-max load puts five rounds into 1/2moa at 3850fps. My favorite 17 is my 17 Hornet though, a 20gr bullet at just under 3700fps out of my Cooper, with the same 1/2moa accuracy for five shots.
One of the better pelt guns, ( shooting fur bearing animals for skin's) tiny hole in, normally don't exit, and kill well, with shots to chest, on coyotes etc, out to 300m plus,
Also very good for hurling gophers (pieces) skyward. again out to long range.

I like to have a play with one, but the .17 hornet and 17 Fireball, are much better for my application, which is pest destruction, no recovery of fur or meat.

I guess I could always start reloading and use my new 17 hornet for birds? Lol southern Manitoba is horrible for moving targets. I hardly know where I can even shoot, let alone shoot small critters. I might be trading my new cz 17 hornet in for something else

The .17 Rem is fookin' hilarious with hits on gophers & magpies out to 300 yds with the 25 gr Hornady HP bullet. The sound on impact is music to me ears. My last one was a Rem 700 BDL that shot decent enough & barely moved the image in the scope upon firing. The 17 Rem is pleasant to use for many, but one should use care in reloading and follow with good bore cleaning so as to save the barrel from early retirement. Shooting lots of rounds in a short period without cool down ain't good.
I loaded my one to 3800 fps to be nice to 'er.

I only have a rim fire 17 mach2. I love it but i have no use for any other 17 where im at. I use a 2506 for coyotes and im building a 250 savage for that sole purpose of shooting varmints of all kinds

No, wasn't available as a repeater, but for shooting ground squirrels, I don't find it an issue. We set up portable Caldwell benches that swivel, and shoot for hours without moving. Shooting 150 to 250 yards, reload speed isn't an issue. And the best part about the hornet, is that the barrel doesn't heat up like the 17FB. I shot 50 rounds in less than an hour last week, and barrel heat was not an issue. The other fellows each used two 223rem rifles, and rotated them out as they heated up, and the mirage from the barrel became an issue.
i know of a few 17 Remingtons down here that were used by pro Fox shooters back when foxes wer worth $40, now days the fox is worth $10 and the common rifle is 204 an 223, we have a loyal following of .222 shooters but the big downside to the 17 Rem here is price of Ammo.... stupidly crazy high..
Alot of these guys were reloaders but havnt for some time now as the use for the rifle is not there.... kept in safes because of sentimental values only.
