Who's ugly rifle is this?

I'm guessing closer to 8lbs.

Rifle aside, those are nice pictures.
Rifle weight can be very deceptive. It is truly amazing how fast weight climbs with the addition of accessory items (scope, mounts, sling, etc.). In truth, any rifle under 8 pounds, all up, is a pretty light rifle. It takes some considerable effort to knock a pound off that. Quite often, the difference in weight distribution is the difference between a rifle which feels heavy and one which does not.
Some people really like the ulta-practical, stainless steel/synthetic look. Others may not care for it all that much. Myself, I like all sorts of rifles but would say my favourite rifle type would be a 1960's style bolt action sporter. I like wood stocks which are plain but not unattractive and I like blued steel. Ultimately, I like rifles that work for their intended purpose and feel good while doing it. I was fairly satisfied with the Gatehouse rifle (although the chambering was a little hard to swallow) and would, cartridge aside, happily hunt with that type of rifle.
I suppose it is only fair to point out that this is coming from a man who frequently carries a Lee Enfield; so it might not mean much! Regards, Bill

And considerable coin. I would sooner drop a couple "comfort" items from my pack than carry a featherweight rifle.
As Bill says, a lot of how a rifle feels is balance. I know this one balances well for me. I used to be real excited about "light" rifles but not so much anymore. They are indeed a joy to pack in the mountains, and I spend considerable time in the mountains, on foot, but I dont' find this rifle a burden in any way. It's been up lots of mountains with me and I except it will climb a few more, too.
This Mdl 70 feels great, shoots exceptionally well, feeds and extracts with one finger and is the perfect "all around rifle." I'd hunt for anything anywhere in North America with it.
I can be hard on gear and I'll take a stainless rifle with a good synthetic stock over a blue and walnut rifle for most any hunting situations, but especially when the terrain gets rough. CHips and dings on a wood stock dont' appeal to me much, but the scratches and gouges on a synthetic just remind me of good times. And if I feel the need to repair them, it's only a spray bomb away!

Uhh...I think I bought the rifle and used it in stock form in 2003, and then I decided I liked the 300WSM cartridge, and Bill built it in 2004 or 2005. That is my best guess, anyway!
