Why all the hate for Ishapore?

Posts #38 & #39 are both on the money. From what I gather on the trusty internet, The British were careful about being out gunned by the rabble who weren't inclined to toe the mark.

They used a 2.5" brass 410 shell from factory. Its a un necked 303 case. ( firing a 303 in a 410 shotgun will form these shells) or magtech makes a 2.5" brass shell.

The ones that can shoot the three inch shells were rechambered once they hit north america

Thanks! This is the information I’ve been looking for! So odds are if I find one in North America it’s already been rechambered. Also as someone whose just gotten into reloading I find it intriguing that I could make the brass shells and reload.

Ok so i jumpped the gun assuming the 2.5" would work from factory. They will not. You need a 57mm case. 2.5" is 63.5 so you would have to trim the case if it has an original chamber.

But a blown out 303 case is correct. Thats what they used they work out to be 57mm or 2.25"

Ok thanks, trimming is no issue for me. Just need to find a 410 lee Enfield first haha!

Is anybody shooting their .410 Ishapore SMLE? Are they chambered in 3 inch and I'm assuming the barrels are smoothbore?
I do quite like .410s and Enfields..
Lastly, WHY did they bother to rechamber? Are there a lot of grouse in India that the army needed to take care of?

I have shot mine with fireformed 303 brass loaded with two 41 caliber round balls. Not all that accurate but fun to plink with.

I have fired a rechambered .410 musket with factory 2.5" shells. It worked OK but the rims seem a little too thick and it was hard to close the bolt and get the extractor over the rim. I did manage to buy 3 cases of original .410 musket ball loaded ammo. I sold one case, kept one sealed, and opened the third. Selling a few of the packs here and there but I haven't fired an original round yet.

While the external finish on most of the Ishapore stuff I have seen is crude (rough paint/suncorite on the metal and grimy stuff on the wood), it all seems to function well and shoot as accurately as any other Lee Enfield. I have always looked at the Ishapore equipment as just another variation to collect. It also doesn't hurt my feelings that the prices tend to be lower than British or Canadian versions.

I’ve been looking for a long time and finally I got my hands on a .410 lee Enfeild. 3” chamber. It’s a 1939 sht le that was converted in 1950. The wood is very dark so some details are hard to see but it has a slot for what would have been its magazine cut off. The nose cap has the hole for the piling swivel and the rifle is all matching. Skeet shooting this year is going to be a whole lot more fun. Here are the pics!
