Why all the hate on 9mm

I've shot pretty much everything you can shoot in handgun rounds - along with 308 and 223 rifle in handgun, I've shot 50AE, 10mm, 41, 44, 357 magnums, and 454 Casull. I shoot 9mm because my shot placement, speed and accuracy are better using 9mm, and the cost factor makes it easy to shoot very high volumes. My goal is to be always able to put all my shots into a 3x5 card, regardless of position, speed or conditions. I'm closer to that with 9mm than I am with 45. I think most guys who have issues with the 9mm have other issues, I'm not bothered by that or, for that matter, them.

9mm is the intelligent person's choice, it's just as accurate, a lot cheaper, and has less recoil than a lot of other calibers. What's not to like as far as target shooting goes? If someone were to break into your home and threaten you and your family, and you're using a 9mm pistol for protection...well
something like Hornady Critical Duty 9mm+P is going to take care of business just as well as a .40 or .45 round. Therefore anyone criticizing a person for shooting 9mm or .38/.357 is obviously poorly endowed and trying to compensate. He probably has a jacked up diesel truck too...makes you feel kind of sad for their poor ladies. :-D

Not much cost different for reloaders. Cast your own difference is ~15# leads, so say $15 per 1000, penny and a half per round.

45s are easier to see on paper. Miss my eyesight.

As for hating 9mm folks are just pulling your chains so don't let them pull it.

There's folks out there hating one caliber over another? I must have better things to do, and/or run with a more tolerant crowd.

It's a toolkit--they all have their purpose.

What does that mean??? Its like I read the words, but I don't understand...[/QUOT

I shoot IPSC classic division. The minimum caliber to shoot major power factor is. 40. Has to do with scoring. For open division 9mm is permitted for major power factor.
I am still shooting paper but the rules of the game influence the caliber choice.

Everything is fun to shoot for me. But if we were in the USA without mag restrictions, I'd rather have 18 9mm in my mag than 8 .45ACP.

You can't cure stupid.

Personally, I can probably put more rounds quicker on target with 9mm than a .45ACP. Could also carry more rounds of 9 while dodging zombies and fleeing.... Faster.

I love 1911s, but I would never carry one.

9mm, 40cal and 45 don't matter. I've seen trauma presentations done by anesthetists on modern handgun ballistics in the human medium. neither of those calibers actually kill very well. 6 out of 7 people hit by handguns survive being shot to make it to the OR, even multiple times unless you hit them in the head or are using a monster caliber revolver. you want them dead, use a rifle or shotgun with appropriate ammo types. you want to kill paper, use whatever strikes your fancy and doesn't cost too much. anyone whos interested I can send a youtube link to a 40 min presentation to watch. Its American but still relevant.

truth, comparing 9mm 40 and 45 is like comparing Olympic sprinters. Not much diffrence especially for someone who doesn't run. (ie target shooters shoot paper not people)

This IPSC stuff is so confusing.

The 9mm is the thinking man's .45.

Just kidding! In this kind of discussion, the only wrong answer is the other guy's!

I like both 9mm and 45 ACP equally. Don't own a .40 because I never bought any dies or needed it. I also like .38 Spl and .22 LR even more for handguns. Why?

All of them get shot on paper targets and that's it.

Power factor does mean something in IPSC for rules and sports where they need to knock over metal targets.
Pistol rounds are very underpowered compared to rifle rounds. I've seen what they do to steel plates vs rifle rounds.
When it comes to self defense my first choice would be an AR-15 actually. One round to the chest with that and he's not going to do much about it.

Well that .223 round will go right through one human body and continue on for about another 300 meters and most probably not in a straight line. So I'm not going to shoot an rifle round inside my condo for self defence, that's just plain reckless and negligent. At least with a 9mm, that round will have dispersed almost all of its energy going through a human body.

ignorance, ego, etc.

Personal preference is personal preference, but as for self defence 9mm is better than 45 cap, and 45 acp is better than 9mm. Fact.

Lots of variables to consider

These kind of discussions always seem to fall to "stopping power". We can't concealed carry (or open carry) here in Canada, and even the legality of using a firearm to defend yourself within your house is debatable. On top of that, even if you could conceal-carry, realistically, the odds of you being assaulted, threatened of robbed here in canada are pretty slim, at best. In those minute odds, and you could hypothetically carry, the odds of a 9mm round NOT dropping an attacker are probably pretty slim as well. Otherwise, I suspect, police and armed forces the world over wouldn't use the round.

So ultimately, discussions like this are fun, but if you're going to use the "stopping power" argument, it's all just masturbation.

Flame away.
