Why all the hate on 9mm

I've never come across any hate for the 9mm. Pretty much everyone I know with a restricted license has one. Lots of ammo and gun choices, plus even factory ammo is affordable.

Everything is fun to shoot for me. But if we were in the USA without mag restrictions, I'd rather have 18 9mm in my mag than 8 .45ACP.

As a Canadian, that's why I'd rather have 10 45's instead of 10 9mm's

Until they make a 46...

This topic is so old... like 1985 old.

I say shoot the one that makes you the most accurate, faster. I see old farts shooting 45 'because they love it' and they are 4 times slower than everybody else, they suck, but they like to suck shooting 45, who cares. It is a retarded conversation really.

I use the one I LIKE and shut up.

I've had guns in .22LR, .22Mag, 9mm, 10mm, 7.62x25, .40, .45acp, .357mag .44mag, also shot many other calibers. All my handguns now are .22's and 9mm. Just comes down to ammo cost and practicality. .22 is more of a gun in hands of someone who knows what he's doing than .50 in the hands of someone who doesn't. ;)

IM_Lugger, that is one of the smartest answers Ive read here. Although most has their valid points and preferences.

Hello all, I just joined canadiangunnutz today. I just applied for my pal and rpal. And the question that's been on my mind for awhile. 9mm or the 40? I took my rpal course and picked up the Smith and Wesson M&P It felt the best in my hand than any other of the pistols. I don't want to get into what brands are better than others. I just want what felt right in my hand and that I was most comfortable with. I think to start It will be the 9mm then I may get the 40 :)

There's something in there that really calls out to me. ;)
I grew up shooting the .45 ACP Colts since I was a teenager back in the 70's. I still love the ol' girl. Goes where I point it, but much slower of course LOL

Do it!

You won't beat the M&P 9. Get it and enjoy it. I did. I bought a 45 ACP about the same time, you'd like this gun too. The bookends. The 40 is a 'tweener and has it's charms but I shoot paper and the 40 isn't worth it on paper. I'm sure that I'll get one down the road but I won't "need it" with the 9 and 45 in hand.

9mm is a great caliber. Cheaper to reload and versatile. You can use it in almost every type of competition. You can load minor loads for IPSC and IDPA and you can load major loads in IPSC Open division. We are restricted to mag capacity but in other parts of the world, the 9 magazines hold more than other calibers.

There will always be the bigger is better syndrome in every sport. Guys who have cars with block block chevy's will mock the 4 cylinder turbo charged motors even if they make the same amount of power. Shooting guns is just the same.

BTW: 9mm Major is a 124 grain bullet going at least 1300 FPS. That is magnum velocities out of the little 9mm cartridge.

I remember reading a report from a surgeon who had treated a lot of gunshot victims over the years. He said that from 9mm and up it did'nt matter what you got hit with. I know I can get more rounds on target faster with a 9mm than something bigger. For range use, who cares? Don't listen to the range ninjas.

I love 9mm, very versatile round.. i got 2 pistols in 9mm and one in 22, all i need for now. Well, im also waiting for "Strike One", another 9mm and then im set.

9mm, 40cal and 45 don't matter. I've seen trauma presentations done by anesthetists on modern handgun ballistics in the human medium. neither of those calibers actually kill very well. 6 out of 7 people hit by handguns survive being shot to make it to the OR, even multiple times unless you hit them in the head or are using a monster caliber revolver. you want them dead, use a rifle or shotgun with appropriate ammo types. you want to kill paper, use whatever strikes your fancy and doesn't cost too much. anyone whos interested I can send a youtube link to a 40 min presentation to watch. Its American but still relevant.

I figured I'd post the presentation here anyway if people are interested. Its from 2011 and he uses 2008 data, but handgun bullets haven't gotten any more powerful recently, so its still relevant.

Thanks for your input guys. So glad to see such a welcoming & informative attitude to newcomers like myself who read threads like this to gain knowledge.

And a sincere thanks to others who have improved my knowledge base on not only caliber size but also directed me in directions like IPSIC.

The 9mm isn't a target cartridge and the pistols are a long way from being target pistols. However, you can blame that twit Jeff Cooper(same bozo who invented the idiotic "Scout" rifle concept.) for any animosity over the 9MM. He had a major, um, dislike for anything that wasn't invented Stateside. Mind you, he was also the only gun rag writer I've ever seen who panned a firearm. Called the HK VP70 a Jam-O-Matic.
