Why are there no .40 carbines for sale?

If Ruger would make one in 10mm that would also function with .40 S&W they would have a winner and would not be able to keep up with the demand. I'd take two right now ....

Pretty much impossible without a huge clunky reciever...

The whole point of a 40sw is that it uses a 9mm frame for the magazine... and a 10mm uses a 45acp frame... so a 9mm/40sw conversion is possible and a 10mm/45acp... and the ASR has done just that... i was hunting for a 10mm kit for my asr that i bought in 45acp... but opted to go back to 9mm for my pcc for a couple reasons (cost, effective range, platform)

This is the way. Buy a 10mm, then use 40 S&W ammo when you want to save money, and 10mm when you need the extra power. 40S&W is just a 10mm short.

You are correct in the sense of chronological order, the 10MM coming into existence then the 40 but there is one small difference in the cases. The 10MM USES .032 thick moon clips for use in revolvers. In my Ruger 10MM GP 100 I use .032 thick moon clips while the 40cal requires .028 thick clips. . I discovered this when I encountered misfires when I used 40cal cases. I got hold of Ranch Products and they made me 20 odd clips to test and the misfires came to an end.

Reliable Gun imports clips from Ranch Products so if you run into this issue you might want to see if Reliable would bring in some of the
.028 clips. for you.

Most guns have a strong enough extractor that they will headspace by the extractor. YMMV.

Andronicus, you sound very confident so I'm sure you've done your research and understand the issues involved. So this isn't directed at you, but for those who are interested but haven't looked into it:

Most 10mm guns probably will headspace 40S&W ammunition on the extractor, at least for a while. But headspace isn't the only issue. Aside from a 10mm revolver with moon clips (like Bob says above), none of the common 10mm firearms are designed to function with 40S&W ammunition. But some do, and some designs are much more forgiving than others. And that's before you get to issues of lower power 40S&W ammunition failing to cycle a 10mm action (more of a problem for straight blowback firearms, like most PCCs).

40S&W in a 10mm is not the same as using 38 Special ammunition in a 357 Magnum (which many common firearms are designed to do).

You have to ask yourself: What could possibly go wrong? If you know and understand the answer to that question and you're fine with it, then fill yer boots.

I can't speak to revolvers much but every time I have simply swapped .40 in place of 10mm it has worked 100%. I don't do it at all any more because large lots of super cheap .40 aren't really a thing these days and just loading my 10mm down a bit will accomplish any wear and tear reduction I may be after.

B what gun are you using the 40 in? Would be an interest for folks with the same gun as you.

I can see where eventually extractor may fail. The only difference in cost is the cost of used brass and a bit of powder.

If I wasn't so cheap I would just run 10MM in my GP100. The Revolver is a bit different though as the brass isn't tossed into neverland and the case rims are not getting chewed on so the brass will live a bit longer than running thru a semi.. The other side of the coin is why spend a grand on a 10M M if you are not going to shoot 10MM..

I also have a GP100 in 357 and now having shot both the .357mg in a Revolver will meet the 10MM using 200 gr bullets in both yet can be shot with 38spl bunny fart loads as well with way more choices of bullets. Not a fair comparison when using a 10MM in a semi for sure but there you go.

The 40 will disappear in time if it's only attraction is to replace 10MM cases in 10MM guns.

I didn't list them because it's quite a spread but you are right, it would be helpful. Multiple Glock 20s throughout Gen 3, 3.5 and 4, Glock 29, Glock 40, several 1911 10mms, ASR, and a couple Thureon Defense Carbines off the top of my head. I was a bit concerned about losing an extractor but never did. Most of the ammo that I used was from Wolf or Custom Reloading.
