Why are there no .40 carbines for sale?

Using 40S&W ammunition in 10mm pistols: Yes, the internet says "It works" in plenty of Glock 10mm pistols. But Glocks are special. Most other pistols (and as far as I know all PCCs) are not similarly special. Even with the Glock there is no free lunch: Depending on your ammunition, chamber fouling can be a problem when switching back to 10mm. And it surely does reduce both reliability and accuracy (though probably not enough for casual shooters to worry about).

Look past some blog or article on the internet saying “it works” and there’s enough video of it actually working, I know most manufacturers are going to say it’s not recommended but they have lawyers and liability concerns telling them not to advise it.

For example, if you spend anytime watching James Revees or TFB TV’s YouTube channel you’ll know he’s a fan of the 10mm. He’s done a lot of 10mm pistol and carbine review videos and he shoots .40 in all of them as far as I can recall, is it harder on the extractor? Sure but it’s not going to do anything detrimental, do I shoot it in my 10mm? No, if I wanted to shoot .40 I’d own a .40 pistol but I wouldn’t think twice about it if I did.

I would generally agree about lawyers and liability. But that doesn't mean they are necessarily wrong, either. For the record, I don't think there are any manufacturers that say that it is safe to use 40S&W ammunition in a 10mm firearm (aside from the revolver-with-moonclips example that Bob points out above). I can't get behind a blanket statement like "go ahead and use 40S&W ammunition in a 10mm, it's fine". There are caveats, potentially major ones.

I'm not sure if I made my point. A very large majority of the "it works" reporting is specific to Glock pistols. Maybe even all of it? The Glock design has several features that make it possible, relatively reliable, and safer than other pistols. The link I copied earlier has the details - I'm actually not a big fan of TTAG, but that particular article had the best summary I could find.

I've watched plenty of James Reeves, and if I recall correctly, one thing he does not do is truly long-term high-mileage testing. Regardless, if you have a link to one of his vids showing him using 40S&W ammunition in a 10mm PCC, that would be interesting.

I use 40 in my 10MM Ruger GP100 as mentioned earlier. Note I use
.040 wide clips for 40and .032 clips for 10MM. If I use .032.clips in 40cal brass I get misfires. The case groves are different enough to cause issues in my revolver.

That's interesting - I had always understood that the two types of brass were identical in every way except for the length. Are they the same brand of brass that you're using?

Yes, Ruger clips are .032 and they work in 10 MM brass. When I went to 40 cal I immediately ran into failures to fire due to light strikes. I convinced Ranch Products ( eho just copied Ruger made clips ) to punch out .040 thick clips to accurate the 40 cal brass. He sent me about 20 clips to test. They work 100% in my Ruger 10MM GP 100.

Reliable Gun carry Ranch Products clips. If anyone has the Ruger in 10MM order the .040 thick clips if you want to shoot 40ncal in your revolver. I keep the clips separately. Because I am old, forgetful and on a good day messy I have not used the thicker clips with 10MM BRASS. Sure as hell if I did I would soon mix them up. I have found the 10 brass is pretty consistent from one brand to another as say 38spl, 9MM and 45acp brass that all vary in construction from one manufacturer to another.

Take Care

ps I type replies using my phone and spend time correcting all my typos. Bear with me.

I’ll have a look, I know he does in most of the 10mm pistols he reviews. I can’t remember if any of the 10mm ppc or sub guns shot them.

When the provisions come into effect?

The new Prohib definition came into effect when c21 passed, Dec 15 2023. If you don't believe me go check the Criminal code, section 84, for the definition of prohibited firearm.

Yes but some of that bill comes into effect via oic...

Efegee... it litrally defines what is a prohibitted design... and says all new designs are prohibitted for being imported or manufactured. It is black and white. So if you want a shiny new gun from shot show, unless its coming in under an allowed exsisting FTR pre c21 its a no go... full stop, no exceptions

I think it’s like the 16 gauge of pistols.

It is too feisty for people who want a 9mm for plinking. Too small diameter for those who want to lob 45 cal potatoes. Too weak for hunting like most pistol cartridges.

Like the 16, it’s also my favorite of all of the above. The happy medium of most things suits me best and I like the S&W. It is cheaper than 45, and the brass is simpler than the 9mm (no slope). I’d love a lever 10mm that can shoot 40s&w but the only one on the market is above my pay grade.

I think it's marvelous for folks whom know how to get the most out it. Specialist type folks love this sort ( just my BS opinion...laugh all you want...it's meant in jest somewhat) of cartridge.
Dial it back to about 1875, where are the 40's? They are out there...just a niche crowd.
I've got 38's, 9mm, 40's ( BP flavor) and 45's.
Some in short guns and some in carbines.
Seems like the 40's are sold like Snake Oil. 'Bests the 38/9mm by far, and can equal a 45!'
But 38's and 9mm are so gentle and sedate with most factory ammo. And the 45's do it with a gentler recoil cycle and softer report when fired.
357 mag ( OK...and max?) is sure a harsh recoiling ( I'm admitting to only having shot it in short guns though) round with a sharp report.
Which is a tad random...but someone had to say it... all 9's and 38's ain't pussycats.
A entertaining and interesting topic, let's all hit up T. Wieland for an article on this topic. Fan boy here...I find him entertaining to no end.
Ciao, stay safe.

Paying 50% more for ammo to get a hole that is only 1mm larger in diameter is silly. Manufacturing and marketing is driven by the US, and NOBODY in the the US wants a 10mm/40S&W PCC. It seems to be a Canadian thing, like 7" or 10" barrels.

I think you’re right. Because any semi auto pistol round has a pretty similar crappy trajectory and short range use. Not worth paying that much more for an extra very few yards and very little power increase. Still not enough to hunt with.

I think for the law enforcement crowd, the developments in bullet design had closed the gap in effectiveness similar to the way copper and bonded bullets have affected rifle cartridge choice.

Lots of people are interested in 10mm. 40 not so much. lol

10mm is a niche round in PCC. Think the JR carbine offers one and the tsw aero...don't quote me on that tho.
At the current price, 10mm seems like an expensive choice for a plinking PCC, and if it's for the bush there are way better options than a PCC. Just my 2 cents, feel free to give back change ;)

10mm may be less popular than 9mm but what isn't? It is experiencing a resurgence for sure. Most companies aren't building one or took a while because 10mm isn't .40 or .45. It requires some re-engineering to the point some platforms may never see the cartridge because they can't handle it well enough. I helped work through some major changes and R&D with Thureon Defense when their 10mms first dropped. It is more than just a different magazine and chamber cut.

I was talking with a friend last week about this. He has been trying to sell a JR carbine in .40 for a while now. He said the #1 comment he has been getting from people is, "too bad it's not 9mm, I would have bought it". Out of curiosity he has been asking his buyers why they are reluctant to buy his JR in .40....the reasons given have been as follows:

1. Higher ammo cost for .40
2. Less capacity in magazines for .40
3. Need to get .40 magazines
4. More recoil in .40
5. Marginal performance gain between .40 and 9mm

While I don't have anything in .40 anymore, I (unfortunately) have a lot of leftover .40 ammo. In looking at ads on the secondary market that others have placed, .40 ammo just doesn't sell, and I'm pretty sure it's due to much less demand. On another site, I have see ads for the same number of boxes of .40 ammo for almost a year now. I am sure the seller can reduce to rock bottom prices and take a loss, but them, like me are not that desperate for a buck. I can't see the .40 making any resurgence in the PCC market as long as 9mm is dominating it so much

So it all comes down to PRICE. Had a 10mm open gun. loved it. Try to find the brass after a stage? Now with 40 the price of lead, brass, and mags compared with 9mm.

If Ruger would make one in 10mm that would also function with .40 S&W they would have a winner and would not be able to keep up with the demand. I'd take two right now ....
