Why buy a FX 9?

The heavy spring isn't going to slow the bolt any significant amount. But it may significantly increase the bolt's return speed, which might in turn require a stiffer magazine spring...

Good idea to try it with just the heavy buffer by itself, hopefully that will take care of it. Use reciprocating mass (buffer) to control the bolt opening speed, and use spring rate (action spring) to control the cycling speed.

I think there are things you can do with your handloads with regards to the pressure curve that might also be a factor. But you probably want it to work with factory ammunition regardless.

Still waiting for the Heavy Buffer. It has been with CBS for just over a week. I expect it and some sights for my M&P will be released by weeks end and in my hands within the next two weeks. Noted your spring comments. Will try the factory spring with the heavier buffer just to see which spring combo works best with the buffer.

I just ordered a magwell for the gun. (money down the proverbial well). $87.US so just over a hundred and a bit Trudeau dollars after shipping. Ordered from Shooters Connection. I have ordered from them before. They provide good service. BTW Mikle Seeklander offers a digital course on PCC Shooting. Yup, it has been ordered as well. Might be getting serious about all of this.

Just a couple of comments here...Bob's suggestion on putting fillers underneath Glock mags definitely helped to increase the spring tension and as such, increase the likelihood of the LRBHO working with native 10-round Glock magazines. So thanks for that.

Regarding my annoying issue of the bolt catch going off by itself. Since there is no aftermarket bolt catch/release spring, I just took it apart, took the spring out and pulled the spring apart quite a bit (not sure if I am supposed to do this or not, but the issue of the bolt release going off by itself was becoming unbearable). Well, pleased to report that after I did that, the bolt release no longer goes off inadvertently but only activates when I press it. That said, who knows long long this will last until I have to re-stretch it again...but definitely that bolt catch/release spring is wayyyy too light. It was fine for the first outing or so, but got progressively worse. The FX9 is the gun I shoot the most so I am sure it has experienced a lot of wear and tear. I am hoping an improved spring is developed by FO or by a third party.

thegazelle, I won't get to it for a month or so but I will take my FX 9 to my gunsmith. I'll see if he can make us a couple of stronger springs. He has the equipment to do it. I have a buddy here in Terrace that also has the FX-9 with the same issues so I will get him to do up one for him as well. I'll let you know how I make out.

Glad to here the Glock mags are working better. I have four of my own that struggle holding the bolt back. Oddly enough they work ok in the Ruger PCC.

Thanks Bob, do keep us informed about how the custom springs work out. If it fixes the problem, I'd be happy to purchase custom springs from your friend. That's great that you know a gunsmith who can do a once over on the carbine and see what can be improved.

It is interesting you mentioned the PC Carbine - the LRBHO is iffy on that one with most mags. It's not the gun because with the Ruger S9/SR9 magwell in there with the S9/SR9 mag, it works every time. There is a gap issue when the Glock mags are installed - I posted about this a while back with some photos but that may not necessarily confirm the problem, just something I noticed different between the Ruger and Glock magwell.

It's very similar to an AR, I consider it to be a 9mm AR variant, used to own one. Reliability is pretty good, recoil is nothing special... not great but not terrible.
Overall for the price it's a good shooter.
Personally I wanna get the GHM9.

OK first the buffer. It still is, along with new sights for my M&P pistol, sitting with the CBSA is Missisaugga (sp). It has been there since Aug 21, 2022. I have spoken to an agent four times now. The officer suggested I send in a letter of complaint. Management then must respond to it within two weeks. It also tends to generate a faster review of your shipment I am told. I sent the complaint in yesterday. Time will tell. There is NO reason for the shipent to be seized that I know of. I told the officer I am 77 years old and a six month delay means more to me now then it did when I was in my 30's. We don't last for ever and there is no sequel! She laughed and said she would try to move the pkg along.

I swore earlier this gun would not be a money pit...LOL Ah well I just ordered a 10" upper for the gun. I don't think I will be able to use in the US with the carbine stock I have on it. With the shorter barrel it becomes a SBR in the US I think. I'll see what Freedom Ordnance have to say about it. I just need a set of irons for back up, and another Sig/Vortex red dot and I'll ne good to go. Ummm am I past the point of not calling this gun a money pit?

It appears to me that CBSA is opening a lot of packages. Maybe they need the money or just trying to hassle people. I had one package, not gun related, sitting for 2 weeks. Maybe it doesn't sound long to you guys but that's for stuff I have imported many times before from the UK. Remember UK to Canada is usually one week, super fast, that's why I am doing it. Faster than within Canada.

For the win! My package was released from the CBSA this morning at 9:00am. Amazing what filling out a Complaint form will do to speed up the process. There was no reason for the pkg. to be held up in the first place. Moving trade along ought to be the 2nd priority right after preventing illegal items from entering our country. The answer is better training provided to the officers along with better pay and more funding to hire more officers. Trudeau has cut the CBSA funding since gaining power not expanded the funding as our friend Blaie continues to claim.

I'll let you all know how the 6oz Buffer works out.

Just an update on two fronts.

I received the 10" barreled upper today from Purolator. Great service from them and Wolverine. Put a new Romeo5 on it and went to the range and sighted in the Optic. All good. No sign of bulged cases with the shorter barrel.; I am running an H4 Buffer (5.3oz) and an AR Spring. I may revert to the stock set up when running the 8" in Competition. The H3 Buffer and AR spring has virtually eliminated the case bulging.

On another front the CBSA has seized the 6oz Buffer. I have had a discussion with one of their officers about the situation. The way it has been explained to me is they consider the Buffer as an AR part. I explained to the lady the Buffer was destined for my FX-9, a carbine the design of the buffer is the same as the AR. She explained to me the CBSA has ruled if the part is common to both and the AR part is banned so to would be the same buffer destined for the FX9 unless the buffer weas identified as a FX-9 Buffer. If the CBSA agrees that I was not trying to sneek in a banned part then I would be given the option of paying for the return of the part to Brownells. Assuming I would be faced with re-stocking fees as well as the cost of postage I have decided to first appeal their application of the Law. She said I really have nothing to lose in doing so and I might just win. She also said if I did win a may still need an Import Permit. She went on to say the Import Permits are not now being issued so that option is moot.

All in all I will be out $84.US. Not the most expensive lesson learned in my life but as a matter of principle I will write a letter appealing the decision. I intend to contact Brownells. They should be made aware of this decision.

If Trudeau gets in again and given his banning of handguns importation, my case maybe an indication of things to come. The AR is banned and apparently so too the parts for the AR. Ban the handguns ban the parts would be Trudeaus logical next step.

ps the shorter barreled upper does not have a flash hider on it so I can practice drills using my lead bullets in the Upper. Bonus!

That sucks.
One option that may be available is pulling your existing buffer apart and swapping in tungsten weights. At one point Dlask had them in stock (and I think Calgary Shooting Center). No idea if either still has them in stock, and don't know what configuration youd need to get to 6-6.3oz, but it may be worth checking into.

I was wrong about the shorter upper being able to use lead bullets. Lead/lube/powder rock hard deposits accumulate on the barrel extension/shroud as well. BDX bullets on order. Letter out today on my appeal.

Hey Bob, if it's a lube/lead issue, perhaps powder coating is the answer to stick with cast? I think I read earlier that you're using 700x as well. What about something a bit cleaner burning?

Ye s 700x is rather dirty.unfortunately these days beggers can't be choosers. For practice it works well enough. Next spring I will try powder coating. I have all I need. It is just a case of setting it a ll l up again. Until the spring I'll confine my shooting to plated if I use the carbine at all. Depends on the winter we have up here. If we get an open winter the carbine will play. Lots of snow and I'll play with my revolvers. Hopefully primers will be mo re plentiful by then along with more reasonable pricing on powder.

Best to you.
